"The room we had had a problem with the toilet. It took ages to stop filling up & at one point the flusher stayed down so we had no toilet in our room. We went down for breakfast today at 9am only to find the landlord had overslept so the place was all closed up. Even the staff were waiting outside to get in. One member of staff, Natalie , was a great member of staff & very helpful. Great location for the town but very casual approach."

"I had a pleasant and comfortable stay. I only ate at the hotel one evening but the salmon fillet was delightful. All of the staff were polite and friendly whilst remaining very professional. Nevan, in particular, was remarkably calm, professional and attentive in the face of multiple large coach-parties in addition to private guests, making him a true asset to the establishment. "Appleby Castle is a special destination, steeped in history that you can experience first hand. Staff care deeply about the castle and we thoroughly enjoyed the piano playing during the meal and the history talk after. Having read some of the other reviews, we can’t say we experienced any of the negatives and thought Peter, Sally (and chef!) did a great job it being just them running the castle."
