"I never stay in the hostel. Expedia description is incomplete. I was not expecting that the room i booked is a mixed room and the amount i paid is just for 1 person. I used to book accommodations always good for 2. Expedia did not informed me that its just good for one, and worst is , its a mix room. I dont like mix room Due to theft incidents. My money was wasted."

Learn more about Pateros

Trip time! Discover the culture in Pateros.

Balut is a 14 to 21-day old fertilized duck egg depending on how developed one wants the duck embryo is. Balut is a common street food that has its origins in China. Pateros is the balut-capital of the Philippines. Balut is boiled and then eaten with salt or some spiced vinegar. The way to eat balut: crack the shell, peel it bit by bit, slurp the soup (cooked amniotic fluid of the chick) before eating the egg and embryo. It is a favorite street food in the Philippines as it is cheap and nutritious. Another version for the less squimish is Penoy. It is an unfertized duck egg that is boiled. Depending on one's preference, it is just egg boiled with the consistency from runny to hard boiled - definitely no duck embryo on this one.
