If you want to experience the "real"Hong Kong then you need to stay in the heart of Kowloon. Its extremely safe and convenient so why not! Living in a 5 star fancy name brand hotel in downtown area central or admiralty is not experiencing HK.

This is a Chinese city; only some people speak English. If you take a cab, show the driver the Chinese characters (maps.google.com shows this). The MRT is great; Octopus pass can be purchased at any service booth and refunded when you leave.

Kowloon is the convenient part of HK, I feel. Easy to get to diff part of town for shopping, sight-seeing, restaurants.I feel energized when walking on the street as everyone seems to be in a hurry. So much to see and experience!

It's a mix of new & old architecture that gives Kowloon a unique identity. The old airport in Kai Tak has now been developed into sports hub that is pet friendly and very walkable.

Kowloon is much flatter than Hong Kong island, and the transport links (MTR especially) are very easy and cheap to get anywhere.
