During the 18th century there was a tradition, that on the first Friday in July, a large number of East Enders would travel to Fairlop to eat a meal of bacon and beans beneath as well as partake in general celebrations beneath an ancient oak tree. By the 1750s it was estimated that over 100,000 people could be expected to attend. The original oak blew down in 1820 and the celebration declined, perhaps as a result of licensing laws. The New Fairlop Oak was planted in 1951 and sits in the middle of Fullwell Cross roundabout. The building behind is the Fullwell Cross library.

"Interesting place. Advertised as a guest house on some sites and Bed and Breakfast on others. Unfortunately when we arrived were told breakfast was not included - that seemed strange I booked the room on the pretence it served breakfast - being a "Guest House". I paid top price for this site when compared with other B & B's. Although they did end up supplying cereal for breakfast. But that is not good enough for the price. Also daily service was minimalist. "Hi, Everything was very nice overall, and I truly appreciated the hospitality. However, I did notice that the gluten-free options at breakfast were quite limited. Additionally, there were no clear labels indicating which products were lactose-free or gluten free. As dietary needs like gluten and lactose intolerance are not uncommon, it would be wonderful to see a wider variety of gluten-free and lactose-free options, clearly marked, in the future.
