When you are interested in military history, the fortresses of the defense line of Amsterdam are a must see. Build around 1900, it consists of some 46 fortresseses, batteries, dikes, dams and locks. The enemy was partly kept out by inundating the land outside the defense line. The invention of the airplane was a real spoiler for military strategists...

"We stayed in the island lodge. The lodge itself is very nice, only downpoint of the actual lodge is lack of storage space in the kitchen. My biggest complaints about this place were 1. When making the booking it NEVER mentioned that the only way to access your lodge is via a small rowing boat. I kid you not. I was with a family of 5, and none of us had ever rowed a boat a day in our lives. Had i known this upfront i would never have booked this lodge. THIS ROOM IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ANYONE WITH...

"Very modern and comfortable studio apartment In a quiet neighborhood. It was convenient to go by bus/train wherever we wabted, only 30 minutes to Amsterdam. Nice place, good accommodation for 2 or 3 people. We spent one week exploring Amsterdam and the surrounding areas. It was a pleasure to return to this place after a busy day. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
