Kata is MUCH less busy than it's crowded neighbor Patong. It nice to stay there if you want to be in that area. Unfortunately you have to go through Patong to get to many things. Don't try to go through Patong area on their Songkran holiday.

Very family friendly. But with small or no sidewalks it gets very crowded on the streets. Lots of strollers. Even more scooters blocking access for walking. Excellent beach. Very calm, beautiful water.
