Fabulous stay - luxurious, delicious fresh cooked meals, wonderful setting and wildlife, particularly birds and butterflies. Staff all very welcoming, knowledgeable tour guides. Real focus on eco tourism and sustainability.
The location and views from the property can’t be beat. The food was fabulous, and the staff is incredibly accommodating. Gabriel and Sandra are amazing servers at the bar/restaurant;and Efrein at the front desk is extremely customer service oriented and very kind to work with. Looking forward to my next visit back at this wonderful hotel!
Our stay at Lapa Rios was unforgettable from the moment we arrived. Staff were waiting for us as we got off the ferry in Puerto Jiménez, and after a scenic drive to the lodge, we were welcomed with tropical drinks and warm, personal greetings. The attention to detail and level of service throughout our stay were exceptional.
We stayed in the Matapalo Suite, which was private, luxurious, and exactly as pictured online. Set deep in the rainforest with panoramic views of the ocean and jungle, it was an incredible place to relax—and the A/C was a lifesaver during the hot, humid rainy season. We often saw monkeys playing right outside our suite, and woke each morning to the calls of howler monkeys.
Dining was another highlight. The food was fresh, varied, and well-prepared, and the staff worked hard to accommodate dietary needs—including gluten-free options for one of our group. We also went on several guided hikes led by fantastic naturalists who helped us spot wildlife and made the treks fun and informative, even for our 80-year-old family member.
What really sets Lapa Rios apart is the level of care from the entire team. From organizing personalized activities to making sure we were comfortably checked in for our return flight, every detail was handled with professionalism and warmth. Lapa Rios is the perfect mix of eco-adventure and luxury, and we can’t recommend it highly enough.
Fabulous stay in a wonderful location.
The staff are truly top-notch. Attentive and friendly. Every request was answered with “Of course, with pleasure!”.
Food was excellent. Morning coffee with steamed milk delivered to our room early morning so we could sip and watch the sunrise from our balcony.
A variety of on-site tours are included. The guides are excellent. Special shout-out to Sandra for finding the small Red-eyed tree frogs during the night tour.
Scarlet macaws flying all over the lodge, monkeys everywhere, all sorts of beautiful birds and interesting critters right outside your room.
The grounds and views are beautiful. Hike to a waterfall within ten minutes. Pool is nice too.
They will take you down to the secluded beach and set you up with chairs and cooler. The beach is beautiful but very rocky.
We had the Matapalo suite. Very nice though close to the entrance and main road so the intermittent traffic noise was a minus. We had a small issue with a large wandering spider and then a bark scorpion getting into our bathroom (each just once) but they responded within 3-4 minutes both times. They installed a door sweep on the bathroom door within hours to prevent them entering the bedroom- very speedy response. The view was outstanding however.
Overall Lapa Rios is an outstanding lodge with wonderful staff, and I cannot recommend it enough. Five stars.
The property is very unique in that you will see wildlife everywhere. People who have issues walking should avoid the villas . There are just too many steep steps leading to the main lodge. The roads are not paved so be prepared for bumpy rides.
Excellent stay. Beautiful room with a view of the Guelph and Pacific Ocean into the rainforest, room 9. There are 17 rooms in total, the last being 225 stairs away. Lots of wildlife walking to and from your room. The hikes are well guided. The beach is a short walk downhill 10 minutes away. A shuttle is available at certain times to return or a short workout up the hill to the lodge. The staff are exceptional, kind and willing to do whatever it takes to make your stay complete. The meals are delicious and presented artistically. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed every moment. Wonderful memories!
Although housekeeping worked hard each day to mop the floors and deck we believe the coffee cups and glasses in the room never changed nor cleaned via dishwashing. It appears they were wiped out with a towel in the bungalow. After 5 nights we asked for clean pillowcases since none of the sheets were yet changed. The staff was very nice and friendly and assist you in speaking the Spanish we learned prior to visiting.
Great resort, once in a lifetime holiday.Few snags
We had a great stay at the resort. Steps may be an issue for some but we liked being at the bottom of the hill as the wildlife was great, we had more privacy. The bigger issue was the difficulty in communicating with the hotel when you needed something. With no phones in the room, and a big climb to get to reception, it is a bit of a problem. It could be easily fixed by giving guests a radio handset (commonly used by staff throughout the resort). On one evening when we returned to our room, the housekeeping staff hadn't closed the door properly. we returned to find the door wide open. In a normal hotel this is bad, but when your hotel is in the jungle with monkeys, shakers, armadillos, scorpions and ants all in abundance, it is a problem. They hotel was very apologetic, but this kind of thing shouldn't happen in a resort which costs $500 a night.
The experience didn't detract away from our holiday though. I would heartily recommend the experience of staying at the resort to anybody. The activities were all brilliant. Wildlife in abundance. The policy of no wifi is welcome to allow guests to completely escape work etc. The food was good, too, though they could focus on giving less choice and rotating the menu a bit. Waiting staff and activity leaders were all great.
We just spent 5 nights at Lapa Rios with our two kids ages 10 and 8. We all loved it. Great setting, great rainforest experience, terrific staff across the boards, and really good food.
