Larçay (Indre-et-Loire). L'enceinte est du castellum. Le Castellum de Larçay. Il s'agit d'une fortification militaire gallo-romaine du IIIe siècle, c'est à dire du Bas-Empire. Le Castellum domine la vallée du Cher et le grand axe de communications de Bourges à Tours*. Le Castellum est le fortin gallo-romain le mieux conservé de la région et sans doute du Nord de la Gaule. Les murs dont on voit encore les pierres de petit appareil* liées par du mortier, peuvent expliquer en partie cette conservation. Beaucoup d'édifices anciens ont été détruits non seulement par le temps, mais aussi par les populations qui utilisaient ces édifices comme carrières de pierres prètes à l'emploi. Le petit appareil ne pouvant livrer que des moellons de piètre qualité après de gros efforts pour les libérer du mortier, a pu dissuader la récupération donc la destruction de l'édifice. Les 21 monnaies récoltées à l'intérieur du fortin s'échelonnent entre 120 et 320 après J.C... Un bâtiment découvert au nord-est du castellum et plusieurs fosses et sépultures à l'intérieur, attestent d'une réutilisation du site de la période mérovingienne jusqu'au XVe siècle. Le Castellum est un quadrilatère d'environ 80 m sur 70 m. Il est possible qu'il n'y eut jamais de muraille du côté nord, côté vallée. A proximité, au sud-est du Castellum, se trouvait une grande villa* romaine dont les vestiges ont totalement disparus lors de la construction d'un lotissement dans les années 1970. L'examen de fragments de céramiques récupérés en 1975 confirme une occupation au IIe siècle. Des éléments d'édifices antérieurs, des tronçons de colonnes par exemple, ont été utilisé à certains endroits dans les fondements du castellum, celui-ci est donc bien postérieur à la villa. Route de Bourges (Avaricum), capitale des Bituriges, à Tours (Caesarodunum), capitale des Turones, par deux stations intermédiaires (Mansiones), Gièvres/Chabris (Gabris) et Thésée/Pouillé(Tasciaca). "petit appareil", maçonnerie utilisant de petites pierres (8 à 16 cm.)
