The Wheatsheaf Inn

"We stayed here for a wedding in Cuckfields and this hotel was in a very good location for this. The hotel itself is very nice, being a lovely old building. The room was a bit small for two people and the bathroom did feel a bit run down/shabby. Also - while I appreciate it was a bit of an unprecedented situation, we were there in one of the heatwaves this summer and really struggled with the heat. Given the age of the building, I would not expect AC, but the fans provided were tiny so provided barely any relief. To make matters worse, there were no plugs by the bed so it wasn't even possible to plug the fan in by the bed, which made it almost unbearable to sleep in. We ate here on one of the nights and the food was lovely, with helpful staff as well! We were still satisfied by our stay here but think it was a bit expensive considering the above."

"A lovely place to stay with plenty of character and a peaceful setting. The manor has a charming atmosphere and is a good option for travellers looking for something a little different from a standard hotel. A few tips for future guests: check exactly what facilities are available and whether there are any additional charges before booking, particularly if you are travelling with children or planning to make use of specific amenities. It’s also worth confirming check-in times, parking arrangements and what is included in your room rate. Overall, Ockendon Manor is worth considering if you enjoy historic properties and a quieter setting. As with any stay, knowing exactly what is included before arrival will help you plan your trip and avoid surprises."

"Perfectly acceptable for a night or two. Parking was found on the street a little walk from the hotel. Nothing fancy, but cheaper than Gatwick and is super easy to get too from the A23. Town is nice with coffee shops, restaurants and Waitrose supermarket all short walking distance. Also very close to the train station"

"The rooms and bathrooms are somewhat dated, but the service and attention to detail from the staff was impeccable. They were extremely helpful and courteous. The hotel was clean, had plenty of parking. Although the hotel is above a pub and on a fairly busy road, the was no noise to disturb our sleep. I would recommend this for a short trip or getaway."

The Hickstead Hotel

"The hotel was clean throughout, however it did look very tired. Gardens not maintained, externals need a lick of paint, no windows or air conditioning in our room, bathroom clean but you could see the knocks/marks. The staff though were excellent, the breakfast comprehensive and a limited restaurant menu offered a good enough choice for an evening meal. There is plenty of parking. This hotel is ideally located for the Hickstead Showground albeit you do have to cross a couple of very busy roads to get there on foot (29 minutes away on foot). Hickstead offer a hotel bus, but it does not come to the Hickstead Hotel. Perhaps the owners could speak to the Hickstead Show Committee. We did speak to a number of folk returning to the hotel for a second or subsequent time, which is clearly a positive. Some were riders family members. The hotel is also planning a major redevelopment, so comments about its tired appearance may well be redundant in 12 months time. All of the staff we met were very friendly. We may well return again. For information we travelled by train to Haywards Heath (lots of trains from central London) with a taxi finishing the trip at a circa £20 cost. All in all a good trip and we met some lovely people."
