"We recently stayed at the Adults Only section of the Barcelo Grand Resort and it exceeded all our expectations. By choosing the AO, you receive access to all other hotels within this “community” that has a mile of beachfront and is landlocked with no public access, making it feel very private. The à la carte restaurants were all very good (my favorite being Sapporo which is a Japanese restaurant), room service was good and the buffet provided lots of options and were decent as well. You can also eat at restaurants and buffets at the other resorts as well, but we did not. We chose the premium option which I felt was worth it for access to the premium lounge areas. Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and helpful. The beach area is huge and chairs were always available on the beach when we were there. The pool was a little harder to find chairs if you aren’t out there early, but that would literally be my only complaint of people saving seats and never showing up. We were there mid-April and the sargassum (seaweed) is definitely there, but they do an amazing job to keep it as clean as possible. It varies day to day depending on the winds and weather, so just keep that in mind. However, you can usually walk a little further up the beach within that mile stretch and find areas with no seaweed. There are good areas for snorkeling and swimming in the ocean as well as a pier to walk out on and see the sea turtles. I could go on and on… we’ll definitely be back!"

"Very disappointed with this resort. I chose it based on reviews that did not match reality. The rooms were clean, but the bathrooms were very outdated. There was no visible security, guests were fighting around 2–3 AM after parties, and no staff came to check on them, which felt unsafe and disrupted sleep. The beach also had no security. Buffet food was limited, soups were overly salty, and items were not refilled if you came later. Not suitable for a relaxing vacation—more of a party place. Would not recommend for relaxing."

""The resort in Playa del Carmen had so many wonderful aspects—beautiful grounds, fantastic food, and most of the staff were exceptional. However, I had a deeply upsetting experience. After being seated in a restaurant, my girlfriend was asked to leave due to a dress code, which was incredibly embarrassing, especially since we were already seated. The assistant concierge manager’s response was frightening—he spoke in a threatening, almost thuggish way, and it left us uneasy, especially as tourists in a foreign country. I also made a mistake by reacting in anger and disrespecting her on the way out, and I deeply regret that. My reaction was a response to feeling powerless, but I take full responsibility. Despite this, I hope the resort addresses this behavior, because it otherwise has great potential. I give the resort 3 stars—the staff and setting were fantastic, but this incident left a serious mark on our experience.""

"Overall a pleasant stay - room was clean, beach was ideal for young kids since the report is essentially in a lagoon, staff was very friendly, food was delicious, grounds were beautiful and well maintained. One down side was the fact that you don’t make reservations for the restaurants for dinner - it’s all on first come first serve basis. We would wait up to 2 hours for a table and missed all the nightly entertainment. "

"Chez Waffle has a pretty back lounge area with view of the water and fish swimming into the inlet. The condition of the rooms is a bit dated. The prices of food on the high side. It is extremely quiet in this gated community. If you want lots to do, you are isolated. I did diviving and day trips every day, so spend little time at the hotel (only evenings). The local busses that run between Playa an d Tulum are excellent. Very cheap! Overall, enjoyed my stay and would do this again. I recommend it."
