HOSHINOYA Tokyo

HOSHINOYA Tokyo

10/10 Excellent
"The Tokyo Hoshinoya is the flagship of the chain. It melds the feeling of a ryokan with that of a modern hotel. The comfortable rooms and the halls have tatami mats, and there is a spectacular onsen on the top floor (separate men’s/women’s’ baths). The restaurant offers a terrific dinner. Breakfast can be at the restaurant or in your room. Every floor has a common area with snacks and drinks. As with all the Hoshinoya hotels there are quirks to learn for a successful visit. The young and very eager staff will question you about every detail about your every move (dinner reservations; arrival and departure information; transportation needs; etc etc.). Staff don’t communicate with each other very well, and English language skills vary substantially, so one spends much time explaining the same thing over and over again to different staff members. We invited my wife’s cousin and spouse for dinner at the hotel, for example, I was questioned by at least six or seven staff members about it during the days before the dinner. (When would they arrive? What were their names? Are they hotel guests? Where will we meet them?) It became farcical. That said, when we had the dinner it was phenomenally interesting, delicious, and a great success. We loved the hotel and highly recommend it. Just be patient as the questions arrive and you run into quirks."
