Spend a day in the 1880s at this historic farmstead where volunteers in period costumes tend the animals, plow the fields, and cook in the kitchen. The best part of this 900 acre farm is that, as part of the local park district, it's free! It's fun for the kids, and also for photographers - most of the buildings are original or restored from original plans and photos.
A unique look at an old piece of farm equipment known as a Dump Rake, or Sulky.
After hay was cut and left to dry for a few days, the horse drawn sulky would gather the hay and leave it collected in rows called windrows, which eased the process of loading the hay onto the wagon.
This tool and method increased collection time dramatically, considering the alternative at that time was a hand rake.
However, just as the hand rake was outdone by the dump rake, the dump rake was replaced by gasoline powered tractors in the 1930s. Generally, dump rakes have been relegated to interesting, rustic yard ornaments...
Carriage Hill Metro Park and Farm is a historic farm that provides visitors with a glimpse into the life of a farmer over a century ago.
This historical farm, tucked away amid the suburbs of Dayton, Ohio, provides its visitors with a glimpse of what farm life was like just a few short 150 years or so ago...
The bright red barn on the grounds is certainly an eye catcher, and is complete with a windmill, horses, pigs, hens and a rooster... who by the way, is very protective of his hens!
The history of the farm is told in the visitor center, and a riding center on the farm provides trail rides.
Overall, a fun family day outing!
