The villages combined have a great mix of shops, restaurants and pubs. Ambleside has plenty of things to do, with a cinema, indoor climbing wall and mini golf, while Hawkshead is particularly pretty for gentle wanders, with cobbled streets, quintessential ginnels and whitewashed cottages. When it's time to venture further afield, head to the stunning Tarn Hows (1.5 miles) for a classic circular walk suitable for families and wheelchair users alike. Grizedale Forest (4.5 miles) has excellent walking and cycling trails to keep you busy, and the surrounding fells promise everything from relaxed strolls to more challenging hikes. After a day out, reward yourself with a hearty meal and local ale at the nearest pub (1 mile).


Inside, this traditional cottage has gorgeous floors, natural woods and thoughtful styling for a warm and inviting atmosphere. The cosy lounge/dining area is centred around a wood burner, with deep-cushioned sofas and a Smart TV for relaxed evenings in, while the dining table seats four for sociable meals. The cottage-style kitchen features Lakeland slate worktops and lovely grey units and is fully equipped with all the necessary appliances for self-catering. Upstairs, there are two welcoming bedrooms – a double and a twin – both dressed in quality linens. The shower room, complete with a power shower, is ideal for soothing tired muscles after long walks or bike rides.
