"This was my favorite accommodation in Japan. It was very cozy and made me feel home. We had the Sennari room. There were 4 beds in two rooms but we only used two. "I never saw an image of the exterior of the building in the advertisement on Expedia. I never read that access to the upper floor was via a steep staircase which made carrying two suitcases to one’s room difficult. The place appears to be managed by the Wat Hotel next door but without access to the Wat’s facilities. The walls between the rooms were such that one could plainly hear conversations next door. The room was fine but the experience frankly disappointing."

"広々として，清潔感もあり使いやすかった。夜に入館したため，チェックイン時の鍵の部分が暗くわかりにくかった。外国人対応も意識しての掲示もわかりました。館内は段差があるので、サイト上2階への階段の案内の他に字とことプラスされていればkさらに良いかもしれません。また，チェックイン前に宿泊者の写真登録が必要な意味も、実際にチェックインしてセキュリティ上理解しました。滞在は快適でした。"

"The onsen was nice and clean with friendly staff. The location was a bit away from the old town and hiking trail. A nice hotel. The food was not as nice as the onsen and Roikan we stayed at in Nikki, hence the 4 stars."

"I enjoyed the breakfast! It was one of the best breakfast so far. It had lots of choices from traditional Japanese to western choices. I appreciated it learning and tasting the Japanese breakfast as I am here to do so. The room was clean and quiet. The bed and pillows were comfortable. I wished we had a better view of the city but we got the wall and roof of the building next to us. I like that it was very close to the bus station and that we were able to leave our luggage before we checked in so we could explore the city. The staff was very helpful in providing us with information. They were also very friendly and polite. The staff is what makes a hotel experience excellent!"

"The hotel is very conveniently located. It’s 5 minutes away from the train and the tour bus stations and 10 to 15 minutes away from the major attractions. I only used taxis once in hope to see the Golden Temple but be aware that most temples close at 4 PM in Takayama. All the hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. I’d say 70 % speak English but have your Google Translate ready to use. Good breakfast. People enjoyed the onsen and told me great things about it. Small bathroom. Daily housekeeping service was impeccable. I would stay here again if I come to Takayama."

Okuhida Hot Spring Hirayukan

"Okuhida Hot Spring Hirayukan is conveniently located, just a short and easy walk from the Hirayu Onsen bus terminal. A small shop beside the ryokan sells snacks and drinks, which is useful especially in the quieter evenings. Check in was smooth and the ryokan already had our Expedia reservations. As with most Japanese ryokan, copies of our passports were taken. We stayed in the Japanese Style Room, Sengakuso, Non Smoking (35 sqm). Footwear must be removed at the main lobby and changed to the in house slippers, in line with traditional ryokan customs. Our room was located some distance away from the main lobby and required climbing two flights of stairs, with no lift access. There were no shower facilities in the room, which is typical for many traditional ryokan. The onsen baths are located in the main building, and the male and female bathing areas are rotated once a day. Buffet dinner offered at Y4400 per person from 6pm. It was enjoyable and good value, with a wide selection including seafood. Each table is provided with two fuel stoves, and guests can choose between grilling, hotplate, or hotpot to cook the raw food. A nice touch is the free ramen served at the main lobby from 10pm to 10.30pm, perfect for a light supper after a soak in the onsen."
