The house was comfortable and felt remote and private yet close to many options to eat and activities. We loved it and our dog loved the yard. Would totally stay again if visiting Shenandoah again.

This was our second stay at Gary's house. Everything was perfect and this trip was even better than last year's. Great house, fire pit and grill - and easy proximity to White Oak Canyon and Old Rag. We'll be back next year!

We had a wonderful time staying in the cabin, It is well off the road and private with lots of nice outside space. Just a three minute drive from the White Oak Canyon trailhead. The kitchen is well-stocked with all you could need to cook your means and the living room well-furnished for comfy evenings around the fire.

Had a wonderful stay. Spent loads of time around the fireplace, played loads of games and hiked Shenandoah. Loved the configuration of the house, the kitchen was well stocked with dishes, cookware, spices and aluminum foil which is rare for a rare but greatly appreciated!

My wife and I were in need of some time away from our work. This property was perfect. A quiet retreat in the woods away from the Shenandoah National Park crowds. The house was cozy and warm. The wildlife was plentiful and active. We enjoyed walks around the property, hikes up the hill, and drives around the local area. We made it over to DuCard Vineyard for some music and wine which was great. We did head up to Skyland and Big Meadows, but the crowds at all the sights were too much. We did enjoy a nice drive through the park. We hope to make it back soon.

This home was the perfect distance from our friends' wedding venue. Although we initially had a minor issue getting into the home, once inside we were pleased to find it very clean and ready for our weekend stay. The driveway getting there is a bit narrow with branches (and as promised, narrow turn around space at the top of the hill), but the yard is open and inviting.

Please more floor lamps, not just overheads. Also, couldn’t find a bottle opener. Couldn’t ask for a more beautiful location!!! Found charger.

what a beautiful location and home. 5 of us and the pup stayed for a long weekend celebrating my oldest's 50th. the house is bright and open with amazing views from lots of big windows. very peaceful mountain side. the daffodils everywhere!!! house was clean, well stocked kitchen and baths. comfy beds. the rockers on the porch in three afternoon sun and the views from the dining room table at breakfast are breathtaking. deer in the yard. far enough out but close enough to great food and winery's. you can't get much closer to the park without staying in the park. Gary was easy to coordinate with and very responsive to questions. already planning our next visit because a long just wasn't enough!

I couldn't tell from the photos how close the house is to the road, and I was concerned that cars might make noise or runover the dog. The house is tucked back from the road on a rise over a small field, surrounded by trees on three sides. The road was not problem at all. You couldn't see it or hear it. The fire pit has nice Adirondack chairs around it.

We were so excited to finally get to this remote home for a weekend getaway our family needed! Unfortunately when we walked in all we smelled was mothballs. The upstairs master suite was adorable with great views and lots of open space. The living room was even so classic and quaint. But the downstairs area overall really needs some work. A lengthy email was sent to the owner with lots of feedback and ideas. Being in the woods there is a bug problem, as one would expect. But more importantly, the dirt and gunk built up in the pipes comes out of every water faucet in the home. BRING LOTS OF WATER because there isn’t a water purifier. And don’t expect to use the bathtub until the water problem is fixed…I would confirm this prior to check in. Gary was responsive but a lot of what we experienced falls on whoever cleans the home to turn it over between guests. This home needs a DEEEEEEP cleaning: baseboards, cobwebs, under/behind furniture, windows, all fabric on couches/chairs, and vents. This little property has so much potential!!! Great yard, wonderful proximity to great hiking, and a nice floorplan.

Our family of four had a lovely 5-night stay at the Old Rag Retreat. The house was comfortable, clean, and cozy. We found the kitchen well-stocked with essentials and more; the beds and furniture were new and well made. The fireplace worked well and was a nice supplement to the electric heat along the floorboards. The under floor heating in the principal bath was especially nice as the weather was cold while we were there.
We had days of long hikes in the national park followed by cozy nights near the warm fire. It was a very nice holiday. Planning ahead for food and supplies is a good idea as the nearest large grocery store is not nearby.

Location is perfect for a peaceful getaway. The house is spacious enough for the four of us and our dog. It is very well supplied, from utensils, bakeware, cookware and even basic ingredients. The internet is a bit weak, due to its location, which is a bummer during the World Cup season, however there are plenty of puzzles, and DVD to entertain us.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this cozy house near Old Rag. Gary was great to work with and very responsive and accommodating. This is a new rental and one that should certainly get a lot of bookings due to its proximity to Old Rag and the White Oak Canyon trails. The drive to the primary Old Rag trailhead is 20 minutes away or just 5 minutes to the Berry Hollow parking lot access. And the lot for the beautiful White Oak Canyon trail is even closer! The kitchen (especially the fridge) could have used a bit of cleaning, but the rest of the house was very clean. The kitchen had lots of amenities for easy cooking. The beds were super comfy and we loved the wood burning fireplace and the outdoor fire pit on chilly evenings. The house is very private with a lovely open backyard. There's virtually no cell service in the area, but the wifi at the house was pretty good and met all our standard needs. You can't stream movies, but there's a BluRay player and some DVDs available. We will definitely return for our next Old Rag hiking adventure.
