Best Western Plus North Shore Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"We were traveling for medical reasons & typically stay at a different hotel nearby. This will become our new hotel each time we travel. The room was immaculate, the staff was kind and helpful. My husband appreciated the outdoor patio after a long day in the hospital. The free breakfast was amazing with hot options. We also learned that they offer a hospital rate. We loved it here."

"The lobby of the hotel was fine and people were nice, but our room was a dump! The latch on the door was very loose, and door wouldn’t close on its own like most hotel doors. Thermostat on wall was barely hanging on, the towel rack was loose, bathtub had been resealed apparently, and the white sealant was coming off of the tub. The pool was broken, along with one of the elevators. To the hotels credit, they did offer us two different rooms, both down by the broken elevator."

"Breakfast ok. Basic, Main elevator broke down when i arrived. Towel holder in the bathroom fell off. Place needs work. One of the entrances had a broken gate. Strange. Staff is nice.Not worth what I paid for it. Place is standing by the skin of its teeth First and last time staying there. "

"This is a hotel in the heart of Salem, so it is convenient to the shops without having to drive, or ride. It is also a hotel with lots of history, and is on the Historical Hotels list. If you want modern, and spacious, this is not the place for you. The Hawthorne is a hotel that transports you back in time. It demands a quiet respect for the fascinating look back at the craftsmanship of days gone by. The staff is very accommodating, and the rooms are clean. Is there some paint chips on the fixtures? Yes. Is the elevator small? Yes. But, there is a postal drop box on each floor, and the elevator still has a wooden ceiling. It is history incarnate, in a city you come to for history. It will set the ambiance for your whole trip."

"Check in was easy albeit a bit underwhelming. I love the old, historical, boutique vibe. My room, The Cook, was a small basic room with a comfortable double or queen (?) size bed. The room was clean and fairly well appointed. Unexpected & pleasantly surprised: * Elevator * Continental breakfast in the second floor common area * Complimentary bottled water in the room * Overhead lighting AND dual bedside reading lights * A small frig with pay-as-you-go adult alcoholic beverages (did not do, but nice to have the option) * Plenty of towels and soap/shampoo * Adjustable heat pump Oddities AND disappointments: * ONLY 1 wastebasket and it was in the bathroom * No place to put recyclables * No bath mat (a bit slippery) and no floor mat to step out onto * Flat sheet OVER the comforter and then only a fitted sheet so I took the top sheet and comforter apart and flipped them so the flat sheet was against my skin * The room had 2 windows which were small, high up & beyond my reach so I was unable to adjust the blinds. There was light pollution filtering in during the dark hours (luckily I had an eye mask)."

"They added a $10 a day parking fee. The other hotel chains I normally stay at don't do that. They also advertise free internet but you need to make an account to access it. The speeds for their "free" package were so slow that even watching Netflix on their room TV kept buffering and dropping quality. The staff were very nice and the hotel was clean but I wouldn't stay again with Marriot or this location."
