Great staff. Easy check in. Nice room. Good location.
We had a private room and used the shared bathrooms. Everything was clean, our room was basic but more spacious than we expected. Staff was friendly and helpful, yet most things we needed were automated (like check in/ out). The location is SUPERB! We could walk to “Eat street” and Kuirau Park is across the street, uber rides were readily available, and the InterCity bus stop was a few blocks away. We would definitely stay here again.

Compact clean room. Comfortable bed. TV kettle and fridge in room. Friendly helpful staff. Big clean kitchen and lounge area. Good location
Everything’s perfect. Kitchen facility were fully equipped. The best thing was the location. Located close to Intercity bus stop. There’s a nice free foot bath within 5mins walk.
Great room. Good for what we needed it for. Unfortunately there was some male sports team staying there also and were extremely loud. The walls a very very thin. But overall it was an ok experience. Would go there again. Loved seeing all the tourists!
The bed was comfy, great privacy with the curtains and sturdy built beds. Cozy warm room, lots of showers etc. large kitchen, dining area, TV sofa section.
Negatives: I was there for 4 days and they did not clean the room once, mugs left from previous people and a dirty carpet that needed a vacuum, not good. Some of the staff were approachable and friendly, others really weren't and just took over the shared spaces at night, mainly talking over the films in the TV area, so odd when there's other places to sit.
Great place for a cheaper option. The doors were very noisy on the first night as they closed at each time someone went though but that would be the only downside of the property. Room was very clean and modern
Rotorua reception took so long to check us in. We had a long trip and just wanted to freshen up and get some rest. The shower gel and hand soap in my room was empty. Left to go to dinner then had issues with the swipe card so couldn't get back into my room, my room was on the other side of the building so had to go down & up more flights of stairs to go back down to reception but had to wait there for 30mins while others were getting checked in. Not my best stay at Haka House but other than that my room was clean and cosy.
Quick check in. The bed was great, not soft like in 90% of hotels, so I did not have a back pain. The room was very clean. The bathroom was reasonably clean. Quuet hours are 10pm-7 am, however one neighbor wad talking over the phone and laughing loudly at night for about an hour so i could not sleep. In my humble opinion such guests must be fined.
This hostel's reception closes around 5 p.m., but I didn't notice the email explaining how to check in after hours, which made things quite difficult. Fortunately, someone happened to be at reception and helped me, so I was able to check in without any issues. Still, it made me feel like in this digital age, people without electronic devices might have a hard time staying here. HAKA was quite large in scale, with a spacious kitchen, dining area, and lounge located in a separate building. The rooms, toilets, and showers were well-equipped and clean. I stayed for two nights. Rotorua has wonderful hot springs, so I visited one on my second day. It’s a lovely town and the hostel was a pleasant place to stay.
The room was clean and well-cleaned, so I was able to stay comfortably! It was also convenient to be able to charge my phone in bed! However, my room was on the first floor, so the noise of people going up and down the stairs and the voices of people checking out early in the morning made it difficult to sleep, which was unfortunate. Other than that it was really great!

It was comfortable and clean. But it was lacking. No fan or AC in the room and there was no soap to bathe. The check in process was fine, but really no soap was surprising. Also the staff could be friendlier.
Very small room but comfortable. Very noisy when people were congregating in the courtyard or by the gate (which kept banging loudly all night when people came through, which wasn't much fun). Unpleasant smell came up from the shower after using. Free parking outside the hostel was very handy.

Staff were really satff on check in. Location was excellent. Unfortunately we didn't enjoy other things about our stay. Our family booked 3 twin bed rooms. None of the rooms had hot water in the showers. It was luke warm at best. The upstairs rooms were noisy with paper thin walls and people slamming doors all through the night. The ground floor apartment was opposite the dining hall. The door was slamming everytime some went through it, thw floor heating caused the room to be so hot we sweates all night under a sheet and had to open the sliding door as it got too hot to handle. The ensuit bathroom smelt like stale urine and the body wash in the shower was empty. I hate to complain but this was the most expensive place we've stayed, but by far the most problematic. We wanted to love it, but won't ne back.
The room and facilities had everything for our 3-day stay. conveniently located in the city, with good street parking and a quiet street. Late check-in was easy with the lockbox. The room was clean, staff were friendly and helpful. The beds were firm and comfortable. The little fridge, electric jug and crockery were appreciated.
A few little issues. The room was very tight and small, with no room for luggage, the large unit with the hangers needed to be shelves for storage. Was weird with the single beds together, instead of a queen bed. Stayed for 3 nights with no change of towel service. The access security metal gate is heavy to open carrying gear, noisy opening and closing with people coming and going in the night when you are trying to sleep with the window open to cool a very hot room.

This hostel has a great location near a geothermal park and feels more modern than others, though the toilets and showers could use an update. The spacious common area makes it easy to meet other travelers. My twin private room was tidy and well-presented, with a handy hanging area. Parking is on the street and paid during business hours, but I had no trouble finding a spot.
The first night was fine, but the room got very hot in the afternoon and evening. There's no AC, which feels outdated, though fans are available on request. I left the window open to cool off, but that meant dealing with noise from the common area and the gate slamming shut—despite a sign, few seem to notice. Adding rubber or a soft-close mechanism would help, especially for nearby rooms.
The biggest issue was noise from neighboring rooms. Despite a "quiet time," it wasn’t enforced, and the place seemed unstaffed at night. One room blasted music until 9 AM, while another group returned at 3:30 AM, talking loudly. The walls offer little soundproofing—I’ve slept better in dorms. There’s no way to report noise unless it’s an emergency, and the emergency line warns of charges for non-urgent calls.
Overall, the hostel has good features, but I’d look elsewhere next time due to the noise and lack of staff presence.
Suited our family of four. Was nice to have the whole room to ourselves. The property is secure with comfortable bunks. Best bunk beds we’ve experienced. Big tidy kitchen with plenty of utensils, tea towels, and plates. The only downside was the kitchen near our room wasn’t functional (a broken tap) and had to go further to the main one through the outside stairs up and down in the wet weather. Some selfish people left their dirty dishes by the broken sink and in the fridge- which weren’t cleared the three days we were there.
