ARTISTS PROFILE. Barbara Romain | Online Gallery BarbaraRomain. com
Barbara Romain was a distinguished visual, performing, and teaching artist based in Los Angeles, California. Her artistic journey began in early childhood, nurtured by her father's profession as an architect, which provided her with ample drawing materials. At the age of six, she contracted measles, leading to temporary vision loss. Fortunately, treatment with cortisone restored her sight, allowing her to continue her artistic pursuits.
In the mid-1980s, Romain experienced a gradual decline in her vision due to a retinal degenerative disease. This challenge prompted her to transition from realistic to more abstract and conceptual art, incorporating vivid colors, text, and symbols into her work. She describes her paintings as "visual music," where she translates the emotions evoked by music into visual forms.
Romain's dedication to art has been recognized through various awards, including Artist in Residence honors from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and the California Arts Council. She has also received a Teaching Artist Fellowship from VSA Arts in Washington, D.C.
Beyond her creative endeavors, Romain has contributed to the arts community as a professor at Columbia College Hollywood, where she was known for her engaging teaching style.
