Significantly different from most correctional facilities, inmates at San Pedro have jobs inside the community, buy or rent their accommodation, and often live with their families. The sale of cocaine base to visiting tourists gives those inside a significant income and an unusual amount of freedom within the prison walls. Elected leaders enforce the laws of the community, commonly through stabbing. The prison is home to approximately 1,500 inmates

"Nice hotel. We stayed on two occasions, before and after the salt flats. On both occasions the heating in our room didn’t work. The first time we asked for it to be fixed which it was, the second time we were over having to ask. The safe also didn’t work and had to be fixed. Edwin on reception is ..."

"We had a lovely time there! However there are no heaters in the rooms so you will be a bit cold. Also there is a window at the top of the door that lets the light in from the hall 24/7. Extremely warm and helpful staff."
