  • A few kilometres downstream from Lake Taupo the river changes to some rapids for a short distance. When the rapids finish there is a drop which creates a waterfall. It all ends with this scene which is stunning. Only a 30 second walk from the car park to the river this shot was taken about a 5 minute walk further downstream on the main track at sunrise.

  • I would not usually consider a garden a must-see experience, but I am really glad a local told us to visit Hamilton Gardens. The experience of wandering through a maze of hedges that open into perfectly cultivated gardens plucked complete from other countries and other eras was quite possibly the closest I will ever come to feeling like Alice in Wonderland come to life. You never know what magical sight waits around the next bend in the path.

A generously sized bathroom with spa bath and separate shower. Sleeping space, lounge and kitchen had microwave, oven etc but a larger bin to separate general rubbish and recyclable would have nice. Still, apart from the traffic noise, no real complaints since the room was a bargain

Manager operator was very nice and accommodating. She always asked for feedback. Set in a very busy street so road noise was not great. I recommended additional seals on the ranch slider doors as, when locked, it had a gap of about 5mm which would allow for more noise. Space was tidy. Heatpump/aircon in good working order. Bed was too hard for me & my daughter. Close proximity to Hamilton CBD. Plenty of parking. Kitchen pots and pans had protective coating scraped off. No sharp nor cerated knives to slice fresh bread nor tomatoes etc. Suited us for our needs at the time. Don’t expect anything flash.

Nice clean and convenient room. Single pillows on beds made sleeping comfortable impossible. Shower had fantastic pressure. I was unaware of the need to have a $200 bond. This would have been easier if I had a credit card. Apart from this it was a pleasant stay.

I like the location and the room. I found the room was overpriced for the stay. I expect the rate reflected the long weekend and the Rugby Sevens that was up the road. Internet was weak.

It took about 30 minutes of arguing that I had booked via Wotif and had paid on booking. The receptionist had not heard about Wotif and said I will have to pay because I should have booked through Expedia. I suggested she get it sorted with her equally screechy manager- who she rang three times during the discussion. I remained quiet as I started to think it was not worth the hassle at the end of the day- but too tired to go off as hunt down a motel at 6 pm on the hottest night in Hamilton. Finally sorted when she found that my credit card had paid for the room earlier in the day - so sorry. The room, a good size, very dated but adequate was ok till I take the bed cover down and see the stains in the underside. Any way, I survived the 80’s nightmare and will not stay there again
