Property History: Point Radio Cottage sits atop an imposing stone foundation laid in 1924 by the American inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr. (1888–1965). “Jack”, as he was known to his family and friends, was the son of a wealthy mining engineer and diplomat, John Hays Hammond, Sr. In his youth, Jack was mentored by Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, who inspired him to pursue a career in scientific research. He attended the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University, graduating in 1910. Two years later at the age of 24, he started the Hammond Radio Research Laboratory on a corner of his parents’ sprawling Gloucester estate. With his father’s money, he built a spacious lab and erected two steel broadcasting towers. Jack named his corner of the property “Point Radio.” From Point Radio, he quickly made important contributions to the fields of radio control, electronics, and naval weaponry. By the time of his death, Jack had been awarded over 400 patents.
Jack was interested not only in science and invention, but in architecture and art history. He was fascinated by European castles, having lived briefly in England as a boy. In 1920, he began transforming a modest bungalow that was part of the Hammond estate into a Tudor mansion, complete with vaulted ceilings, leaded glass windows, and half-timbered façades. On summer vacations to Europe, he purchased antique furniture and statuary which he shipped back to Gloucester to decorate his residence. His most ambitious plan called for the construction of a four-story stone castle rising directly from the sea. The blueprints, which survive today, show soaring towers, Gothic tracery, and high walls connecting the castle with the adjacent bungalow-turned-mansion.
No sooner had work begun, however, when Jack had a falling out with his parents. Secretly, Jack had married a local Gloucester woman, Irene Fenton Reynolds. Not only was Irene eight years his senior, but she had divorced her first husband to marry Jack. Jack’s parents, anxious to avoid a scandal when news of the marriage hit the newspapers, ordered him off their estate. By now, however, Jack was independently wealthy thanks to the sale of his patents to RCA. He bought a parcel of land a few miles up the road from Point Radio and almost immediately broke ground on a second, larger castle. Work on the first castle at Point Radio was abandoned, the windows and doors sealed tightly. The laboratory was dismantled and its contents moved to Jack’s new property.
After the death of John Hays Hammond, Sr., in 1936, the Hammond estate was donated to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston. Shortly thereafter, the unfinished castle and the bungalow-turned-mansion at Point Radio passed into private hands. By the end of the 1990s a two-story cottage had been built on the castle foundation. Today, under new ownership, Point Radio is undergoing significant historic restoration. Architectural details lost over time are being reintroduced. Archaeological studies have confirmed the location of the research laboratory.
Jack left Point Radio in 1928, never to return. He called his new, grander home Abbadia Mare—Abbey by the Sea. Today it is known as Hammond Castle. A museum open to the public, Hammond Castle receives thousands of visitors every year. But to visit Point Radio you must book a stay at Point Radio Cottage!

Very cool experience
We loved the views, how unique the cottage & home are, and its location.
Come for the breeze and the views alone. Stay to enjoy the great food and artsy or outdoorsy (take your pick) activities the region offers. Bonus - the owners are absolutely fabulous and very knowledgeable about things to do and see in the area.
Private and very clean. If you are on the balconies, it still feels private because the other house always had their shades down. Quiet and peaceful. It was really neat to walk around the property and the short walk to the park.

We had a wonderful stay in Gloucester. The home was so comfortable and welcoming. An easy walk to the ocean. We really enjoyed getting acquainted with the local area. Everything you could possibly need is within a 5 minute drive. Loved it.😊
The cottage was incredibly clean and spacious. Floor to ceiling windows give an amazing view view of the harbor and it is an easy walk to Stage Fort Park and the waterfront. The kitchen had everything we needed and the bed was very comfortable. We met the owner and he couldn't have been nicer. The main house if very close, but the owners respect your privacy. We will definitely be staying here again when we return to Gloucester.
We were lucky enough to get to spend three weeks at this cottage. It more than surpassed our expectations. It is so conveniently located to parks, restaurants, and the town. Yet, it seems miles away from civilization. The cottage had everything we needed and then some. This has been one of our very favorite rentals ever. We are definitely coming back.
This was one of my favorite places . I don't know how I can go back to Gloucester and NOT stay here. The cottage is great, the view is fantastic and its walking distance to Stage Fort park. My husband was afraid he would have to pry my clenched fingers from the door frame to get me out of there.
We enjoyed our stay a larger coffee pot would be nice as would a water filter. I brought my own larger pot and my own water, thanks to a previous post. Loved being on the water and being able to see two lighthouses from the upper deck. We came before most things were open before it was in season, We will have to come back so much we didn't get to see. The house was perfect. Very interesting history,
Fabulous location and view
It was spotless - even the outdoor furniture! All the needed amenities were available.
We’re partial to having air conditioning which we only really needed the 1st day. Also, we like watching TV in the family room so with there was a 2nd TV. Other than that, the place is perfect. We’d stay again but probably stick to cooler months.

Fabulous weekend in our hometown
December in Gloucester can be gloomy and grey. We know. We’ve lived here for decades. But you don’t care if you’re staying here! We barely left! The house was everything we hoped and more. The decks, exploring the grounds, and learning more about **** ***** ******* than we already knew. And the view is just unbeatable. Point Radio cottage is a MUST STAY place. Only improvement I would suggest is a full sized coffee pot.
We spent 5 nights and it was a wonderful experience. Mid-April was the perfect time to explore this lovely area without the tourists. The home seemed very private with quiet porches to view the water. The house had everything we could need and we definitely felt pampered. We are a family of 3 so this house was perfect. It can sleep up to 4 but note, everyone is in the same upstairs bedroom. There is a King bed and a daybed with a trundle. My daughter loved it! It is easy to walk to the park or into town. The local seafood was delicious with plenty of dining options even during the off season. It was an easy drive to Boston, Cape Cod, and Salem for days of exploring. Gloucester also offers nice beaches to hunt for sea glass or large sandy beaches if walking is more your thing. I’m sure they are busy in the summer but this time of year they were quiet and peaceful which made visiting more fun for us. I will miss hearing the waves with my morning coffee and watching the fishermen leave with the sunrise. My hope is to visit again some day. We would highly recommend this rental!

Got crashing bricks, not waves...
Location and view was amazing. Cottage was clean and bright with very sheer window coverings(if any). That being said, check with the homeowner before booking. We were greeted by construction workers/landscapers when we got there, and throughout our stay, making it very uncomfortable. We had a worker right outside the cottage (using garden hose) so close to the window in the powder room that I could've opened the window and touched him (keep in mind very little window coverings). We had to jockey our car around to accommodate their truck and equipment. They also woke us up our very first morning at 7 AM shoveling bricks into a wheelbarrow. NOT the peace, quiet and privacy we were looking for. While I understand that the property must be maintained, they should not allow bookings while doing so, or at least warn you of what will be going on. We would not have booked if we knew this in advance. Soo, the cottage itself was beautiful, location was great, privacy was non existent. Our experience was VERY disappointing and I'm sure we won't be back. Gave 3 stars only because 2.5 isn't an option.

No words do it justice.
I don't even know where to start. You've read the history of the place, and you can see where it is and you can imagine the view. But you can't imagine the breeze blowing through the windows, the lush floral landscaping, the quiet solitude of this place. As for the interior, it's one of the most comfortable vacation rentals I've ever been in. Impeccably clean and well furnished. You COULD entertain ten people if you wanted to, but you won't want to and I don't think you're allowed. The entry is almost completely separate from the main house, and we only saw the owner a couple times coming and going, out the window. I've heard he's a swell guy and likes showing off the property.
For you caffeine junkies, you can leave your coffee at home. There is great locally roasted coffee ready for you, along with creamer and sugar and a drip coffee maker. Proper kitchen amenities allow you to cook meals if you like.
But that balcony will make you feel like the emperor of the universe. The upper one, that is. The lower balcony will just make you feel like the demigod of the local galaxy. So, either way .... you win.
Best of all, you can walk to Gloucester for the day, and walk back, only stepping onto a sidewalk for a couple hundred feet before walking shore and park paths into town.
If you're a gardener, leave time to wander around and take in the plantings. There are trees and plants here that will give you ideas.

Great views and location...but...for this price point...DO BETTER.
Great location, great views. Our 33rd Anniversary trip. Safety issues, not recommended for younger children or those with mobility issues. The path to the cottage is somewhat steep and made of deep, small, loose pebbles which make footing precarious. The 3 stone steps going further down to the cottage get pebbles on them and they are already uneven. You will need to carry your luggage up and down the pathway, you will not be able to use your rollers. 17 moderately steep stairs up to the sleeping area. Shower curtain and rugs, wash or replace. Note left for us that the upstairs bathroom latch may lock us into the bathroom and needed 'attention'. Rails on upper deck were rotten an loose, painted over instead of replaced. One new fan and one filthy fan provided. It may be difficult to keep cool in warmer months, we stayed at the end of May. We washed some of our dishes before use, they were put away unclean. You will need to buy oils, spices, condiments, etc. There were some basics, salt, pepper, sugar, flower. We left ours behind for other to use. Modest kitchen cookware, you can probably make it work. Unfortunately, because of the way the property sits there is full view of the living room, both decks, the bed in the upstairs bedroom from the main house. If you want a privacy pull the curtains which then shuts out the view. There was A LOT of work done we needed to navigate people, tools, vehicles parked in the small parking area, and could not enjoy the outdoor areas.
Pictures and postings cannot do this place justice. It is phenomenal. We came for a close by spot to Salem and stayed for Glocester because of this place.
