A few of my friends and I from around the US booked this VRBO about a year out from our arrival date. We were coming into town for the Yosemite Half Marathon and looking forward to seeing each other and hanging out in a house together before and after the race. After a long drive to Bass Lake, we arrived early into town. We messaged the host asking if it was possible to check in early. There is no cell service near the house so we messaged the host in town, waited about 30 minutes for a reply, then decided to go to the lake and waste some time. We drove back out to town two hours later (now 1 hour out from our check in time) to see if the host had messaged us back. No response. We went to the local brewery to waste time until check in. Check in time roles around, and still no check in instructions. I messaged the host again. Ten minutes rolled past, 30 minutes rolled past, 2 hours rolled past, and still no response. After about an hour, we got in contact with the virtual assistant. After one virtual assistant left us high and dry with no solution, another one referred us to their manager. The solution was to cancel the reservation and find somewhere else to stay. The reason I booked the VRBO so far in advanced was because I know how these races go, hotels and vacation rentals get booked out months in advanced; we had little hope we would find anything. About 5 hours and no contact with the host, we were issued a full refund and luckily, found a hotel to stay at.
