The Stables are just as lovely in real life as in the photos, perhaps more so. A reassuring newness is tastefully dressed in a warm, homely decor, cute and cosy. Our hosts were most friendly, calm and helpful, the facilities are well managed and the complex of buildings (and animals) has a wonderful charm. Bathrooms and kitchen are all pleasantly modern and the timber stove kept us aglow all night.
We stayed in January when many amenities and cafes are closed but the surrounding landscape more than compensates in its stunning beauty. We found a handful of good restaurants still open, cruised the peaceful, empty roads by the sea and marvelled at the winter sun slanting over Sheep's Head and Barleycove beach, two nearby locations that should not be missed.
Ultimately, we wanted to stay for longer. It's difficult to find self-catering accommodation of this standard in Ireland and we hope to return.
