International travellers, you should be aware that this hotel is five star by New Zealand standards, which is a much lower bar than many other places.
The room had a musty/moldy smell, mediocre amenities (e.g. hairdryer and toiletries) miserly coffee pods and a poor minibar. It was nicely decorated but missing things you’d expect from a modern hotel like adequate charging/power points.
Service was poor. I had booked the sauna prior to arriving. There was no guest compendium in the room so I called reception to ask what the go was and the person I spoke to appeared personally affronted I had even asked. He turned up at the door to say he was taking me there half an hour later, then did this with all the warmth of a gaoler taking a prisoner to a cell. The sauna itself was very tired.
When I returned to the room at night a fuse had blown and the living area and bathroom lights in the suite were not functional.
As I checked out later in the morning, I told reception (the same staff member) the issues I’d had with the smell in the room and non-functional lights. He said blankly “I’ll tell them.” No apology or offer to compensate.
I am not thrilled about paying NZD 650 per night to brush my teeth by phone torch light but even less thrilled about how I was treated like an ingrate for even mentioning it.
There are numerous other and better hotels in the same vicinity (Movenpick, DeBrett, M Social) and I would not stay here again nor recommend it to others.
