I ultimately took a risk and was able to hop on a bus from Karuizawa, but online it mentions no reservations for buses, and I could not find that there even was one to ...

Hotel Metropolitan Nagano
Stayed 3 nights in an executive room on the 10th floor. It was clean, spacious, and with a good view of the station and the mountains. Will stay again.

Holiday Villa Hotel & Resort Karuizawa
The quiet was lovely and peaceful. Breakfast was delicious and abundant. Beds were comfy. A little too warm upstairs but cooled off in the night. Disappointed the pool was already closed in late August but we still really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful scenery. Highly recommend! the
