This is the spot that commemorates where Lightning Ridge got its name.
A beautiful big sandstone rock has the plaque which holds the history of how this place was officially named. I quote ‘sometime around 1870, a shepherd, his dog and 600 sheep were struck dead by lightning here. From then on, the area was unofficially known as Lightning Ridge, a name also used by Government departments. The village was proclaimed in 1908. The name was gazetted on 5 July 1963’.
Bevan's Cactus Garden - Largest Cactus collection in the southern hemisphere.
John and Elizabeth Bevan established this garden back in 1966. Elizabeth still maintains the gardens as John passed away in 2004 and these gardens are now a living memory of him.
