Savoia Excelsior Palace Trieste – Starhotels Collezione

"We really enjoyed our stay in the Savoie Excelsior in Trieste. We did not dine or drink in the hotel, so experience was limited to passing through the foyer and use of our room. Our stay was to some extent marred by two aspects. Firstly, the accommodation offered to us on check-in, while being a junior suite with balcony/seaview, was lacking important elements compared to the advertised specification. There was no table and chairs in the room and the shower was incorporated with the bath, which we consider unsafe. The initial response was that specification varied with rooms. However, the specification differed only on the downside in this case and no other Junior Suite was available that did fit the specification in Hotels.com/Hotel Website. It would be better if the hotel was actually precise in its specification at point of booking/purchase so a properly informed decision can be made. The Hotel’s response was an acceptably priced upgrade that did actually meet our needs and then more. Secondly, the Hotel sought to add on a 5% gratuity to the whole bill - for staff. This is a novel development of the tipping culture. While they did not persist with this, it leads to an awkward situation. It did bring to my attention that an add-on to the rate quoted on Hotels.com of 10% for Taxes and Fees was already being charged, in addition to local city taxes. I would like to get clarification of what exactly is being covered by this 10%. Fine hotel, well located. Be on the alert"

"Beautiful building in what seemd to appear as a former turn of the century palace. Location could not be better, within walking distance of all major attractions, stores and restautants. Room was extremely comfortable and with impecable design."

"Not up to scratch for a 4* hotel. Arrived early, checked in and confirmed a twin room. Returned later and had to check again. Key cards provided didn't work so had to return to reception from 10th floor. The room provided was a double. First reception said it was a twin, then that it was previously a twin and was now a double, then that we hadn't asked for a twin. They promised to search for an alternative and call me back in 10 minutes. After 20 minutes I returned to reception and waited until they eventually found another room- taking over an hour to sort. The room was barely big enough for two; we had to store one bag on the window sill; there were no drawers or wardrobe- just four coat hangers and one shelf. The ''ensuite was a glass shower cubicle and sink directly in the room, and a separate toilet. There was very little privacy. Shower gels were positioned at head height so difficult to access, the shower was a hose fixed at waist height on the wall and there were gaps in the door seal so water escaped onto the floor and soaked the towels we had to put on the floor whilst showering. The curtains were falling to bits with the blackout lining peeling off so when morning came they weren't blocking the light. Breakfast was shambolic with many dishes and drinks empty for a long time and 15minute queues for the coffee machine. When at reception several other people were complaining about being given a double room not a twin and failings in housekeeping etc. Can't recommend"

Grand Plaza Hotel and Congress Centre

"The hotel was clean, well located, and parking was really convenient. The service was excellent however were a bit understaffed when checking in. However the 1 person serving was excellent and very good. Would recommend staying here as overall, was excellent. "

City Hotel Ljubljana

"Lovely hotel and friendly staff. Bed was comfortable and the room was a good size. The breakfast was great and the location was superb. Small downside is that the rooms are a little dated but that didn’t hamper the experience. I’d stay at the hotel again"

The Hotel Ljubljana

"The Hotel Ljubljana was in a great location, just a 5-minutes before walk from the dragon bridge. There are only three parking spaces for this hotel and you must call front desk to reserve in advance. Cost is 30€ a day. It’s street parking close to the hotel. (You can use Easy Park to park cheaper a few blocks further away.) We stayed in the smallest room with no windows, and surprisingly, we loved it. It was the last available room on our days of stay, but when we return to Ljubljana, I would ask for this room again even if others were available. It was so cozy. The shower was great. The bed and bedding were our most comfortable of all the hotels we used in our trip. The staff gave us a welcome prosecco upon arrival and were so friendly throughout our stay. They have a great included breakfast in the restaurant. We also enjoyed a wonderful dinner there too. (FYI: There is a gelato place right outside the back door entry.) We really loved this hotel and will definitely return."

"Hôtel super! L'emplacement idéal pour visitez la vielle ville. Hôtel calme et très propre. Le petit déjeuner était copieux et de bonne qualité. Les gens à l'accueil étaient très gentil et serviable. Je recommande vivement cette établissement."

"The hotel is located as part of a building beside the main hospital. It has a few supermarkets right next door so useful from that point of view. As you enter there are signs telling you that construction is ongoing on site. In our bathroom there was a shower enclosure but no attachment for the shower head so you had to hold it. It’s a no frills room. The breakfast was good. Approximately 15 minutes walk to town centre."
