We thoroughly enjoyed a day on Ullswater despite the eclectic weather conditions. We motored from Pooley Bridge to Gelnridding and then to Airus Force to see the waterfall (about a 1.5 mile round trip hike) and then back to Pooley Bridge. The glorious dramatic scenery surrounds you on all sides with mountains appearing to grow out of the lake. www.sharonmanning.com.au

A surprising Topiary Dragon in the gardens of Dalemain, a handsome Country House in the Eden valley near Penrith. Also look out for the herd of fallow deer in the deer park and try the marmalade in the gift shop. Dalemain holds an annual marmalade fest every March.
