Capulin Volcano View House

Summary:

Stay at the closest lodging to Capulin Volcano National Monument — a working cattle ranch bunkhouse with some of the darkest night skies in the country. Wide open spaces, volcanic views, and the silence of the high plains. This is the real West.

The Space:

The Capulin Volcano View House sits on a working cattle ranch in northeastern New Mexico — 35 miles west of Raton on Highway 64, just outside Des Moines. Capulin Volcano National Monument is visible from the property. This is the closest lodging to the crater rim.

The bunkhouse is open-plan and comfortable — two sets of bunk beds sleeping up to six, combined living and kitchen area, two three-quarter baths. The juniper plank ceiling was harvested on the ranch, hauled out of the woods, and milled locally. Everything here was built to last, by hand, by the person who owns it.

The east-facing porch is private to the bunkhouse with seating, a picnic table, and a fire pit. The property sits under the same exceptionally dark skies as the National Monument — an International Dark Sky Park — making for some of the best stargazing in the American West.

★ 4.95 across 88 reviews. Top 1% worldwide.

Guest Access:

Private access to the full bunkhouse, east porch, picnic table, and fire pit. The ranch road is generally great for walking — check with Nathaniel ahead of time if you plan to explore, as livestock may be in the area.

Accessible by two-wheel drive on a four-mile well-maintained dirt road. If weather is a concern, reach out before arrival and we will be watching for you.

The Neighborhood:

No neighborhood — that's exactly the point. Capulin Volcano National Monument is minutes away — an extinct cinder cone you can walk into the crater of, and one of the most striking geological features in the Southwest. The NRA Whittington Center is a short drive east toward Raton.

Des Moines has a small café and gas station for basics. The nearest full grocery store is in Raton (35 miles) or Clayton. Stock up before you make the drive in — this is intentionally remote.

For hunters, this is some of the most productive country in the West. Elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and turkey — with direct access to multiple game management units right from the ranch.

Getting Around:

You'll need a vehicle. Four miles of well-maintained dirt road gets you in — two-wheel drive is fine in normal conditions. Plan ahead for groceries and supplies before arrival. This is a remote ranch setting and that's the whole point.

Other Things to Note:

This is a working cattle ranch. Expect dust, insects, and abundant wildlife — normal parts of life out here, and exactly what most guests come for.

Ranch experiences — guided outings with Nathaniel and his family — are available exclusively to guests staying at the Capulin View House. These aren't scheduled tours. They're offered when the timing is right. Ask Nathaniel on arrival.

Looking for a downtown experience? We also host three historic properties in Raton — all Airbnb Guest Favorites, all within walking distance of restaurants, breweries, and trails. Ask us about availability.

Interaction with Guests:

Nathaniel and his family live on the ranch. He's available by text throughout your stay, respects guests who prefer seclusion, and is happy to engage as much or as little as you'd like. This is ranch time — relaxed, personal, and nothing like a hotel.

Wonderful place to get away for a while

We chose the Bunkhouse for its remote location that made it perfect to watch the stars. The beauty of the surrounding landscape and the rich history all around were added bonuses. The house itself was more than we could have hoped for...it was clean, comfortable and had all that we needed for our own meals. Nathan was a gracious host who checked in throughout our stay.our stay. Mus gracious host

Peace and Quiet

We were looking for a place to stay while visiting our family in the area. This home provided a serene setting. It is located down an open range road, but is next to the owners own home. There is a lot of wildlife, which we liked to see. It is smaller in size with one big room, but very clean and very comfortable. It had everything we needed. Communication with the owner was great. We would definitely stay here again!

Dark Sky Haven

Wow, what a place! Very cozy and warm. The sky and stars at night was mind blowing! You could see it all! Planets, stars, constellations, and the Milky Way. This was exactly what we wanted!

Awesome Stay at The Bunkhouse

We had an amazing stay at the Bunkhouse! The location was incredible, picturesque Northern New Mexico, like going back to the Wild West 100 years ago. Our plan was to hike the Capulin Volcano, but we got derailed by a strong winter snowstorm. Nathan was super accommodating with our late arrival, and the Bunkhouse was a warm and cozy reprieve from the storm. In the morning, the high desert was magical, covered in snow with distant volcanos looming on the horizon. The Bunkhouse was a highlight of our trip, and we will definitely come back again!

Gorgeous tranquility

The ranch is a beautiful location and incredibly peaceful. We watched thunderstorms out over the plains and listened to the birds.
