Red currant bushes on road past The Dale Red currants (Ribes nigrum) Currants are closely related to the gooseberry. Red currants were first mentioned in European literature, in a German manuscript from the early 15th century. They were domesticated by the 16th century mainly in the Netherlands and Denmark.
