The cow is above the ha-ha at the rear of Pennard House, looking down on the paved footpath following the foot of the wall from East Pennard church to Home Farm in the background. Usually the livestock would be separated from the big house by the wall, thus protecting the gardens while preserving the illusion of a continuous landscape.
