All Saints Road, Creeting St.Mary Looking towards centre of the village
Creeting St Mary Church. There used to be two churches on this hill - the other being 'All Saints'. This was demolished in 1801 and was situated close to where this photo was taken.

St. Mary's church at Creeting St. Mary This is the view from Church Lane, showing the steps up to the churchyard where a footpath begins. Parts of the church date back to the Norman period, but the tower and north aisle, that appear in this picture, were built in 1884-7.
Creeting St. Mary church The church dominates this hilltop position, but according to a sign in the churchyard there was an earlier All-Saints round-towered church at the photographer's position. The two churches existed together for hundreds of years but after severe damage in a storm in 1800, the All-Saints church was demolished in 1801 and extra space added to St. Mary's. This does not explain why the first church was not built at the top of the hill, nor why a second church was built.
