Ushguli (in the Svaneti region in northwestern Georgia) is a community of four villages, and claims to be the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe.

Ushguli is inhabited by an ethnic group called the Svans and is characterised by its Svan towers - used as familial living quarters, fortified fortresses of defense, and personal treasuries.
