Hanging Rock, Victoria was made famous in Peter Weir's 1975 fictional feature film "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x05QuAhpq6o ). This is one of the scenic views from the summit of this volcanic outcrop. Hanging Rock is also famous for its country horse racing (on New Year's Day and Australia/Invasion/Survival Day (26th January). Nowadays in summer, it is also a venue for big name outdoor rock concerts.
Hanging Rock Country Races - New Year's Day 2011. The following year kangaroos on the race course stopped the event. A cheap and exciting family day out which should be combined with a picnic lunch. Come early to secure a place by the racecourse.
