"This hotel is a gem and one of the highlights of our trip!
The location is simply gorgeous, and the drive along the Sky Road to get there was particularly memorable, with incredible ocean views.
The castle is beautiful and full of history. The owner does a fantastic job of sharing some of it every evening during a free get-together with drinks.
The staff shows great attention to detail, high-quality standards, and an incredible culture of fun and care that we have not seen anywhere else. Brian, the owner, also made the evening stand out with an incredible dinner atmosphere followed by delightful conversations on the patio at sunset with a group of customers.
It is such a unique, elegant, fun, and welcoming hotel. We will be back!"
House between coast, lake + mountains: every window view is a Connemara highlight!
10/10 Excellent
"Stayed at the Old Calla School for a week at beginning of July. The house was spacious, comfortable and clean with a well equipped large kitchen. The beds were also very comfortable. Great views from all rooms and house very quiet and relaxing to stay in. Local shop and pub / restaurant and cafe (both excellent food) 5 min drive. Clifden town is about 20 mins drive and very pleasant. Lots of shops, cafes and good supermarkets. Roundstone (small village) about 15 min drive from house also well worth a visit and has a very pretty harbour. Fantastic beaches nearby house (Gurteen, Dogs Bay, Coral beach) - 10 mins drive. Local beach 10 min walk from house, with huge tidal range and great to walk around when tide out. Met locals hand raking for cockles which looked fabulous. Roads very bendy and slow, but traffic was reasonably light. No TV which at first was a bit disconcerting, however had a really relaxing week and didn’t miss it at all."
"We had a wonderful time in the home. Incredible views, perfect location, and beautiful home. There are so many historical sights and activities that are easy to get to."
Idyllic Connemara cottage with sweeping sea, island and mountain views.
10/10 Excellent
Clifden's premier holiday home with heated pool + sauna - sleeps 24
10/10 Excellent
"Our family of 15 (74 years - 5 years old!) had a wonderful stay at Shane's beautiful home! We loved being so close to town with close proximity to both Killarney and Dingle. We ate twice at Guy's Bar which is also owned by Shane and the food was delicious."
"We stayed in this cottage (that had three bedrooms and three ensuite bathrooms) for a week. We had originally booked it with possibility that there would be five staying in three bedrooms. In the end it was just three of us using two bedrooms so it was great that we could all have our own bathroom! Although the cottage could comfortably sleep six (two double bedrooms plus one twin bedded room) the lounge/dining area may be a bit cramped for six people as there were only four dining chairs and a two-seater sofa with two armchairs.
The cottage was well presented with nice fixtures and fittings. The showers were hot and the beds were comfortable. We arrived late at night and the next morning we noticed a slight issue with a leaking sink that caused a puddle in one of the ensuite bathrooms. This was fixed later that same day after we reported it.
The TV was Wi-Fi enabled and limited to apps based TV viewing as it wasn’t near to the TV aerial socket.
The kitchen area is a little compact and has a quirky layout, but it had a decent single oven, microwave and fridge/freezer. Tea towels, kitchen roll and washing up liquid were provided and there were lots of crockery, cutlery and glassware. There was also an abundance of spare toilet roll so there was no need to buy extra supplies!
We cooked some meals during our stay and there was a selection of saucepans and lids available. One frying pan was quite worn, with the enamel coating badly damaged so we avoided using it and reported it on our return home so it could be replaced for future guests.
We really enjoyed staying here and appreciated the peace and quiet after long days exploring. The cottage was cosy and comfortable, and it works well if you’re happy to cook some meals yourself, as eating out requires driving elsewhere. The road to Clifden is quite winding so not preferable to do late at night.
The Country Shop in Letterfrack (a 5-minute drive away) is well stocked with everyday essentials, making it easy to pick up anything locally. There is also a good SuperValu supermarket in Clifden with free parking that also stocks a selection of local Irish produce too."
