Our first major sighting, after less than an hour on Kenya’s Maasai Mara, was this gorgeous lioness as she moved from her shaded spot within a lone acacia and down onto the open plain as a cooling rainstorm swept across the area. The Mara, despite its protections, remains an area of complex lion/human interaction due to the close proximity of numerous pastoral Maasai communities. These herders have often resorted to illegal night-grazing within the reserve’s lands, especially during times of drought and lion attacks on livestock have led to past retaliations on the Mara’s predator population
