I have been asked to review the Kensington Gardens Hotel, Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy. For the life of me, I can’t imagine why as Sonder, mere days before I was due to arrive, emailed to inform me it was “no longer able to honor” my reservation due a licensing issue between Sonder and Marriott. I was left scrambling to figure out what to do as I was now one day past my cancellation option via Expedia and was due to fly to the UK in a few days. Following hours on hold and in conversation with representatives from both Expedia and Marriott (attempts to reach Sonder by phone and online messaging were unsuccessful, as was an attempt to reach the hotel directly), I was assured I would not be penalized for a cancellation that was clearly not my fault and that I would be refunded the amount I paid up front through Expedia for my five-night booking. These statements proved false as I’ve since been told I would not be refunded the significant amount of money I paid — this despite the fact that, once again, I cancelled nothing and the situation was completely beyond my control. Additionally, I had to scramble to book another hotel, which given the short notice proved more expensive than my original booking. As I was to be in London on business, I had no option but to book something. So I was indeed surprised to receive requests to review my “stay” at the Kensington Gardens Hotel. As that stay was non-existent — as is the refund I was promised — my rating is decidedly one star.
