Large converted barn, Sleeps 16, Private pool, Close to river beach
Nestled in the woodlands of forgotten France, where deer, pheasants and boar still roam free, set in two acres of land, La Grange de Chatelus is a large 430 sqm converted barn. The barn is over a century old with tumbling grapes and fig trees covering the granite stones. Set over three floors you will find everything you need for the perfect getaway. Here you will have the chance to rediscover what life is really all about.
On the entrance level you will find a spacious reception area and a sun-filled games room with a full-size table tennis table, dart board, games consoles, satellite TV and log burner. Double doors opening out onto the front gardens where you will find an ancient walnut tree and plenty of shade to read, rest or play. Also on this entrance level you will find a fully equipped laundry room with 2 x washing machines, 2 x tumble driers and plenty of space to air those swimming costumes and towels. Stairs from the entrance hall lead up into the impressive lounge area, which includes a pool table, black baby grand piano, chess/card playing table, 3 large (4 seater) sofas and a log burner. Here, large double patio doors open out onto a lawned area to the back. From here the woodland path weaves it's way through the Douglas fir trees, providing welcome shade from the summer heat. On this level you will be able to dine with friends and family on the bespoke banqueting table in the large kitchen/diner or snuggle down to watch a movie in the cosy cinema/library room. A door from the kitchen leads you into the perfect family suite. With a sofa, beautiful sleigh Boori cot bed, bunk beds, super-king zip and link bed, ensuite with roll-top bath, and large log burner, this is the largest and most versatile of the six bedrooms.
The stairs from the lounge lead up to 5 more ensuite bedrooms. The master suite also has a large walk-in wardrobe, sofa bed with trundle, plus a comfy single chair.
Each of the bedrooms has a large, comfortable zip and link super-king bed so they can be set up as twins or double rooms at your request. Bed linens and towles are provided for a small fee.
The water in this hamlet is sourced from a nearby well (a fresh water spring) and is therefore safe, pure and delicious to drink!
By the pool there is a large dining area, rattan sun beds with umbrella shade, a sofa area.
You'll have to be very quiet or take an early morning or afternoon stroll along one of the many woodland walks, if you would like to spot the deer or many birds that fill these beautiful woods. You will often hear the the cries of the spectacular red kites as they circle overhead with their huge 6 foot wing span. Hear the rustling and loud cackle of the pheasants as the they wander through the undergrowth near the barn.
La Grange de Chatelus is situated in the Natura 2000 protected wildlife sanctuary. There are protected bats and wild orchids nearby as well as otters and other wildlife. La Grange is set in a tranquil hamlet, it is quiet but not too isolated. The small village of Chatelus, which lies on the famous pilgrimage path of the Way of St. James, is a 10 minute stroll away. Here, you will find a little post office and the local bar selling bread and essentials that you may need during your stay. You can order your bread and treat yourself to a nice cold beer in the process. A four minute drive or a fifteen minute, hilly mountain bike ride will find you at Le Thaurion, a pretty, winding river, leading to a great dam. At the river you will find a small beach and supervised bathing in a cordoned off area, with a life guard during the summer season. Relax here with a cool beer, or hire a canoe or pedalo to explore this picturesque river. Dive into the cool waters from the jetty or find a quiet spot down river to sit quietly and fish.
Every season here is breathtakingly beautiful. The colours of the trees in the autumn, around the barn and particularly by the river, are quite spectacular. Walk the dogs or take a stroll along the banks to really discover a slower pace of life.
Here, deep in the heart of France, find a place to escape the rush of life, slow down and take the time to appreciate the natural beauty of this stunning country. The summers here are warm and hazy, but you'll long for a huge thunderstorm so that you can snuggle inside La Grange with your book, watch one of the many DVDs or play games with loved ones.
HISTORY OF THE BARN: In 1850 the barn was started, intended for use on a working farm. According to the neighbour, who is the grandson of the farmer at the time, it took 50 years to finish. In Jan 2003 it was converted into a huge habitable space. The present owners bought the barn in 2015 fulfilling a ten year dream to buy a home France.

Lovely peaceful location.
Great pool and outside eating area.
Cinema room was brilliant for the children, they loved the woods and the river beach and had a great time building a den and fishing.
Kitchen well equipped and there were 2 big BBQ’s that we used nearly everyday.
The hosts kept in touch to make sure everything was ok and we could contact them if needed.
This was the first large family holiday we have done before and I can say the were no disappointments. The pool was awesome, the games room and pool table got so much use.
The cinema was a great feature that the kids loved. Would definitely recommend A****
We stayed as a group of 16 and had a fabulous week at La Grange. The kids loved the pool, the woods, the cinema room when it was cloudy, and the swing was a big hit. The adults loved the bbq and outdoor seating for dinner and sundowners. The kitchen was really well equipped. There was so much space and the play room / games room had toys and games for all ages. Communication was fab and they helped us with some recommendations of places to go as well. A fab week.
We spent a very enjoyable week celebrating my wife’s 40th birthday. The barn is spacious with plenty of area for the kids to play and adults to relax. The bedrooms are large and all beds very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped and we enjoyed plenty of good meals at the huge dinning table.
The pool is great, although the weather was unseasonably cold when we stayed and the pool had an issue and did not reach temp until the day we left.
The location is perfect if you want to get away from it all. And it’s a lovely short walk into the village.
We were out of season so the river beach was not set up for use when we stayed.
What a such a wonderful week at La Grange de Chatelus! We were three families (six adults, eight children) and we stayed for a week during August.
The house is stunning, huge rooms, comfortable beds, amazing ensuites to all the bedrooms, multiple washing machines, tumble dryers and even two dishwashers.
The kids loved the swimming pool, cinema room and pool table.
Richard and Sisca were great hosts, they quickly replied to our messages and the lady who checked us in was very helpful.
We had a great afternoon by the river down the road, we hired a boat and canoes which was lots of fun!
The house is quite remote with a drive to supermarkets and towns but this was perfect for us.
Thanks for a brilliant stay!
We all had a lovely holiday, staying at this beautiful, spacious property. The pool is fantastic and we hardly felt the need to leave the property as the children entertained themselves and it is perfect for relaxing, being so tranquil. The nearby river beach was fun too. The owner was very attentive when needed and provided helpful tips about the area. We’d love to come back!
The property is in a real nice, quiet location. Most of the group stayed in and around the property all week and the children spent lots of time in the pool.
Aside from a bit of miscommunicaitons on arrival it was ideal and we would look to book again in the future.
Beautiful house and superb location for those of you that are in much need of a well earned rest. The facilities meant that the young ones had plenty to do whether it were watching films in the cinema room, playing pool, table tennis and the abundance of toys and games. Beautiful walks in the woods with our dog that we’re plentiful and all off road. Would definitely recommend
This beautiful converted barn sits deep in the French countryside. It had everything we needed for a relaxing stay with the family. The heated swimming pool was the favourite with the children. The host was attentive and kept in touch to make sure everything was right. We visited Limoges and the Lakes and the local towns. Amazed at the lack of traffic on the roads. you could drive for miles without seeing another car. This was a perfect place for our family break.
Can't think of any negatives, unless you are looking for some night life. We certainly were not.
Pros - The house is fantastic for a large group. It has a well equipped kitchen, great living room and lots of facilities - the pool table was much loved. The bedrooms are all comfortable, each their own en-suite. The BBQ was much used and there is a lovely outside seating area.
Cons - the pool was not working for a number of days. The owner lives in the UK and does not have somebody monitoring the pool locally. Managing a pool from another country seems to be a recipe for disaster. Judging from the visitor book and some previous reviews this does not seem to have been the first time the pool has caused problems.
As a group of 9 friends we met here for our annual holiday. Property is in a good location, very quiet and lots of space. Rooms are all doubles and en suite. The shared spaces are large and plentiful. Lots of butterflies and lizards just outside the door which was lovely. The river is very close by and swimming in there was great. We had a problem with lots of flies at the property which was difficult as we had to keep the windows and doors open to keep the airflow through the property, it was heating up quickly in the hot weather. Nothing really to be done about it but just to mention. Some of the bathrooms were quite tired and a couple seemed to have been leaking into the rooms below. They were clean though. The kitchen is beautiful and large, the table is a very good size for everyone to sit around. We did clean half way through the week to see if that would help with the flies, there were some areas which were perhaps missed on a couple of previous cleans but nothing too bad. All in all, if you want time away with friends or family with lots of indoor and outdoor space this is a good affordable option. The owners were very good in all their communications.
We were with 3 families (6 adults and 8 children including two dogs) in the beautiful accommodation of Richard and Sisca. We liked it overall very much. The accommodation is spread over three levels, downstairs is the playroom for the kids with ping pong table, dart board, kicker, PlayStation and Nintendo Wi. Also the laundry room with two washing machines and dryers is on the lower level. On the middle level is the large living room with grand piano, pool table and sitting area, the frequently used cinema room with a lot of DVD's and also books. The videos can be played on a projector with sound system. This was especially our children very happy to use. The really large kitchen is very well equipped and offers plenty of space. There are two refrigerators, a separate freezer, two dishwashers, an ice machine so that it really lacks nothing. We really liked that that. From the kitchen you can go outside at ground level. In addition, there is another toilet and a large bedroom with bathroom on the middle level. On the upper level there are 5 bedrooms with bathroom. We all found the beds to be very good. Everyone always slept well. If many people are showering at the same time, the water pressure is a little low. The outdoor area is very spacious and well maintained. The pool is large. The neighbors are far away and it is absolutely quiet. Contact to Richard and Sisca was always very good.
