Crusader Karak Castle, Jordan.
Crusader Karak Castle, Jordan.
Kerak Castle is one of the largest crusader castles in the Levant. The castle was built in the 1140s to replace the weaker castle of Montreal (aka Shoubak Castle) to the south. Because of its position east of the Dead Sea, Kerak Castle maintained control of trade routes from Damascus to Egypt and Mecca. Saladin captured Kerak Castle in 1187, where it continued to play a key role during the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottomon Empires until 1917.
