At first sight it may seem a heap of scrap metal, but in fact these are the stripped remains of the British steamer “H.M.S.Crested Eagle” on the beach of Zuydcoote (near Dunkirk). The wreck is a tragic reminder of the WWII Dunkirk evacuation: operation Dynamo. The Crested Eagle run aground on May 29, 1940 after being attacked by German dive bombers and set on fire, killing 300 soldiers and crew.
Operation Dynamo: between the 27th of May and the 4th of June of 1940, some 338.000 mainly British, but also French and Belgian troops were evacuated from the beaches as they fled a German advance towards the coast. The rescue was regarded as a success but there were also around 90,000 killed, wounded or taken prisoner. During the operation 243 ships were sunk and the RAF lost 106 aircraft.

"3 generations of us stayed for 7 nights. Great for the children to be so near to the sea. Property over 4 floors so perhaps not ideal for very young children. Spacious living and dining area. Top floor shower drainage was poor and a garage provided for one car but parking a second was challenge during the day but no issues at night. Overall, a good property."

"Holiday Suites was great! In a brilliant location with a lot for the kids to do. Access was really easy, lovely restaurants just down the road and a awesome beach just a couple of minutes drive. Stayed with 2 of our kids and the apartment offers all you need for a great stay! definitely recommend."

"Short one night stay before travelling on, we arrived very late but the reception staff was extremely friendly and understanding. We had a family room which was very spacious, clean and well equipped. The beds were very comfortable, a welcome treat after a long journey! The continental breakfast was also generous and delicious. Would definitely recommend a stay here, and no doubt we'll be returning! "

"Only issue was using our navigation car system to access the hotel. It was telling us to drive the wrong way down a one way street. Very confusing, but was directing us to the parkade which was not easily visible. Little stressful. Had to park the car and walk to the hotel lobby to have things explained. Others were at the front desk with the same issue. But hotel is quite lovely!"
