Darling, Private Cottage Near Hawaii Volcanoes Nat'l Park

Volcano Kahaualea Cottage, a perfect place to explore the East Side of the Big Island, from the village of Volcano, Hawaii. Retreat from the world in privacy on 3 acres of lush forest. The cottage, constructed in 1982 and completely renovated in 2018 was artfully built from repurposed woods. The interior has vaulted ceilings throughout the single space and lots of windows onto the green surroundings.

*** A new internet provider finally became available for the house in 2025!! The internet has been updated and is no longer slow as many reviews have mentioned.

The kitchen with concrete counters has a full size range and oven, refrigerator and enough counter space and small appliances to prepare meals. Dining seating is at the high top table for two inside or on the back lanai. There is a comfortable loveseat and SMART TV for streaming entertainment in the living area. Free WiFi throughout the Cottage. The electric fireplace can be turned on for heat and/or visual flames. The queen size bed has views of the forest from two angles. There is an air mattress that can be set up near the bed for a third person. The gorgeous bathroom hosts a large, tiled shower, toilet, sink and good sized closet. We've stocked the home for your comfort and use during your stay in Volcano. E Komo Mai (Welcome)!

This cottage is located on a very private forested 3 acres of Hawaiian rainforest. A romantic haven! A centralized location to explore the whole east side and to explore the now open Hawaii Volcano National Park.
It is located on 3 square acres of rainforest. 4.5 miles from the volcano National Park. Extremely private. Road is gravel for 3/10 of a mile but easily passable by even low clearance rental cars. Check out Volcano Village with a few wonderful restaurants and art shops. Ask us about the weekly farmer's market!

This was such a cool space! It felt like we were immersed in the rainforest but still with plenty of luxury. On clear nights you get treated to a beautiful view of the night sky for stargazing, and this spot is just a quick drive to the national park.

Loved this place. Clean, comfortable, remote, private... Felt like we were in our own fern forest. Very comfortable and had everything we needed. Easy drive to Volcano entrance. Loved the frogs and the stars.

Great location close to Volcanoes National Park and Volcano village. The cabin is charming and comfortable and tucked into the most beautiful cloud forest. We loved the fireplace in the evenings after a day out hikingClose to Lanakai Brewing, a great spot for beer and pizza.

This cottage felt like our very own Fern Gully! It was beautiful, inviting, had great amenities (we especially loved the faux fireplace). My only feedback would be that the bed could be a little more comfortable. But otherwise, no complaints!

This home is truly special. The privacy makes you feel like there is no one else around for miles, the sound of the frogs lulls you to sleep at night, and the home itself is beautiful and well-kept. I would 100% stay here again

Beautiful place, bring earplugs

The space is beautiful inside and out, we struggled with the gate lock the first couple of times we used it, it started to loosen up the more we used it. The frogs come alive at night and give you a symphony. If you’re sensitive to noise while sleeping bring ear plugs. We will absolutely stay here again.

What a unique place to stay! We thoroughly enjoyed this location. It is a very private location in the middle of dense vegitation. We slept so well here listening to the sounds of the forest. The location makes for a great base to explore Volcanoes NP.

Beautiful updated forest cabin

From the moment we arrived on the property, we could tell it was going to be beautiful! The little cabin is situated in the middle of the forest 10 minutes from volcano national Park. The grass driveway and surrounding forestry is pretty amazing to arrive too. The cabinet itself is clean and updated, while still remaining very charmingly rustic. There's a huge shower and the water gets hot very quickly. The fireplace under the television is a beautiful addition for chili nights. And the washer and dryer were a blessing after long hiking days. The internet is also very fast! 100% would book this cabin again when we come back.

Amazing place to stay in Volcano

We completely enjoyed our stay in this private cottage! There was more than enough room for the two of us. We really enjoyed the privacy that we had here after spending the prior 2 weeks at various resorts on the other islands.The kitchen was very well stocked and included all the necessary utensils, tools, and appliances that were needed to make breakfast and dinner. We appreciated the full-size stove & refrigerator. The bathroom was huge and we loved the walk-in shower with the pebble floor! There were plenty of towels provided, and we were grateful for the soap & shampoo that were provided.The laundry machines were a nice amenity and they did a great job washing clothes. We got caught out in a rain storm on our last night and it was nice to be able to dry the clothes before putting them in our suitcase.The internet worked very well, and we were able to connect our accounts to the streaming services and watch shows on the TV. It worked quite well. Our only complaint would be that the bed is starting to sag in the middle and is likely going to need to be replaced soon. That, and it got really cold one night after we went to bed and the fireplace heater took a long time to get the room warmed back up. That blame really goes to mother nature as she decided to surprise everyone with a quick, unexpected drop in temperature that night.We highly recommend this cottage to anyone thinking about staying in Volcano, and we're hoping we can stay here again!

Hawaii hiking

Was an amazing location and places. Made me feel connect with the outside. Very quiet in terms of human activity(traffic,neighborhood). Enjoyed the sound of the birds around the property. Close to the national park if you wanting to do some hiking or catch an eruption.

Great location and wonderful stay!

We had a wonderful time at this location. Clean, well appointed, and quiet. Note the internet can be slow and there are no blinds on the windows, but these were minor inconveniences to the otherwise very positive experience.

This is a really cool cottage!!!

This is a really cool place, and would definitely stay here again! This cottage is on a private lot surrounded by beautiful, lush, green trees and plants that were very thoughtfully planted. There are no window coverings and the windows are everywhere, they were all clean and all slide open and have screens (also clean). It was especially nice to have the windows open during the day. The nights get cool in Volcano and there is a heater in the faux fireplace; however, the warm air goes up to the vaulted ceiling and there is no ceiling fan to push it back down. We were super lucky in that Kilauea erupted for 12 hours for one of the nights we were there and you could see the sky glowing out the bedside window!My only complaint is that it's past time for the loveseat to be professionally cleaned.

A few glitches but as advertised

We stayed in this little cottage for two nights during our trip to the Volcano National Park. The cottage is cute and exactly as pictured. It is very close to Volcano and a short drive to the park. The road is a very rough but able to be driven by any rental car. The property manager is very responsive and handled a small issue we had with the gate lock very quickly. We didn’t have any issues with frog noise as we ran the dehumidifier and it acted like white noise. There are just two small things to know. There are no shades whatsoever. The issue we had was during a full moon, it is extremely bright right on the hear of the bed. It would be nice to be able to just block that a bit as it is an extremely beautiful but extremely bright moon out there. The other is the WiFi. We didn’t have a great cell signal so we were hoping to use the WiFi to make some of our plans for the next day. Despite resetting it as suggested by the property manager, we never saw over .95 mbps and that was when it worked at all. We were not there for TV or streaming but future renters should be aware of it in case its needed it for some reason.

Stay at Kahaualea Cottage

Beautiful, secluded property. The cottage is surrounded by ferns and trees. The cottage is comfortable and cozy with all the amenities needed for your stay. The electric fireplace is a special treat on the cool evenings. Although there are neighbors, you feel like you are all alone. The communication with the property managers was excellent. We’d definitely stay here again.

Private tropical cottage

Great location and charming interior layout. Always appreciate nice art on the walls. Very private and tropical surroundings. The kokee frogs will serenade you in the evening. The WiFi could have been stronger and a bit more kitchenware would be nice.

Great location with easy access to Volcanoes National Park

Very secluded location. Cabin layout was cozy and modern. Kitchen had all necessary appliances, dishes, pans, and utensils. Cooler and ice packs were available for use. If the frog noise bothers you turn on the dehumidifier. That helped a lot.

Perfect quiet cabin in the jungle, close to NP

Wow! This rental truely has a wow factor: quiet neighborhood, jungle setting, flowers, cleanliness, and amenities. And decor. If you’re looking for a beautiful, quaint getaway, this place is it! This is one of the best vacation rentals we have stayed at. Will look for again if we return to the Big Island. Mahalo!
