It is a cute little place. I wish there weren't so many empty buildings along Rte 66. It has such potential to be a great kitschy strip. It could use a bit more though

A typical old Route 66 town that has a lot of old abandoned motels and businesses from the glory days of the Mother Road.

While I was only passing through Tucumcari, however I couldn't resist going to the Dinosaur Musuem at the Mesalands College. It was amazing. If you are passing through, I highly suggest stopping by.

Very unique mid century neon strip motels you don't see any more. Places like that have seen better days since the national motel chains have taken over most places.

Tucumcari NM is a little old and run down, but they have a fossil museum that's cool!

Route 66 glory days must have been terrific. Many empty buildings now. Sad

I didnt actually spend time in the town, but would like to visit their historical museum one day. Tucumcari is small and "vintage" yet has a surprising number of hotels and, of course, restaurants and gas stations.

Great choice of restaurants. We chose Del's which had a fantastic variety to select from.
"The weed shop right behind it made sure 1/4 of everyone who came in from visiting it smelled. The swimming pool is slightly bigger than a bathtub. No close food options other than truck stops. "
"Quick check in. Conveniently located off the expressway. Short drive from good restaurants (Del's). Close to Route 66 attractions. (Indoor) pool looked very nice, but I did not swim. Friendly, helpful staff. "
"This place is right on the original Route 66. Coming from the West, it’s the first place you come to. Sadly the glory days of Route 66 are over but back in the day, this hotel was hopping. It has a beautiful stocked full bar area and a nice bar size pool table You can sense the thousands of guests that frequented the bar/restaurant along with a mix of locals that would come by to enjoy live music.
Once a Ramada, it’s now the Tri-Star Inn Express and Mike, the owner recently celebrated 20 years at this location. He previously owned a hotel about 70 miles south of Tucumcari prior to settling in Tucumcari.
As an immigrant, he moved his family from New York to the desert southwest decades ago. A hard working family man indeed, doing everything from repairs to cleaning toilets, making beds to making breakfast. He made it work.
Covid hit and changed a lot. He struggled through it but now faces a depleted, unmotivated work force and no longer has the restaurant portion open. The business is for sale and I’m hoping the right person comes along to keep this place going. It needs a little TLC, a dedicated owner with community support and a free good employees. If I had the funds to buy it I would consider it and relocate to NM. Hopefully someone will come along.
Mike, it was a pleasure to get to know you and visit during the two visits I made this summer. I wish you luck and look forward to stopping by again. Keep room 111 open for me!
