Halstead Circular Walk The countryside immediately around Halstead is green and rolling with the valleys of the rivers (particularly the Colne and Stour) opening out as they head towards the sea, and then they reach the sea in a series of creeks and sunken valleys. There are lots of pretty villages around - see Thaxted, Finchingfield, Castle Hedingham and Coggeshall for examples. The Castle at Castle Hedingham is definitely worth a visit - one of the most impressive and intact Norman keeps around. Close by is Colchester that has a wealth of history as (arguably) Britain's oldest town, with origins well before the Roman era. Watchtower at RAF Wethersfield Viewed from the southern perimeter fence, the tower and part of the runway can be seen. The airbase, operated by the US Air Force, closed down in 1990.
