Oze Iwakura is one of the largest ski resorts in the Kanto area with 16 courses, 9 lifts + 1 gondola, and 697 meters (2,286 ft) of vertical descent. It's said to be best suited for intermediate skiers and snowboarders, but there are several courses for advanced and beginners, too. It's not as crowded as other more popular ski resorts and because there are so many advanced skiers, we had a great time snowboarding down several courses and didn't have a any trouble getting around. Location: Gunma prefecture Best to come by car, it's a 2-3 hr drive from Tokyo. (Parking on weekends are free if you have more than 4 people in the car!) Or you can come by shinkansen, closest station is Numata Station on the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line, then another 50min by bus.

"The walk to the station was about 9 minutes but besides that the room was great. It supplied every need. I asked the wife how long the hotel had been opened since everything was like new but she didn’t know. Everything comes with remote control including heated floors and was very modern. I was impressed. If you are looking for a VERY comfortable stay in Nikko this is the choice."

Five beds in a single room, with wallpaper peeling off, and all sorts of weird attempts at “renovation.” For the price, could be good for five backpackers. "We had a fantastic stay at this Ratuken property! The fit out of the projector in the bedroom, and the comfortable furniture make this a very comfortable stay for two. It would easily handle more people. It's a sizeable apartment. The private semi-outdoor onsen/bath with artificial minerals is a fantastic touch. Very relaxing! It's a short walk from town and there are convenience stores nearby. Highly recommended! "

"The room itself was very nice, and it worked well for our family of 4. Everything is new, and the space is stylishly designed, which is sometimes hard to find in smaller towns in Japan. The challenge is the property is a 10-15 minute walk, along a main road, to any restaurant or cafe, etc. There's a 7-11 nearby, but apart from that, you're alongside a busy road and a highway off-ramp ... and not much else. If you have a car, this is no issue. But for us, with two young kids, and of course...
