We drove the Ypres Salient in the Flanders region of Belgium to visit the memorial sites from World War I. Of particular interest to us were the Canadian memorials along the way. The Brooding Soldier was the most poignant memorial we came across. The imposing granite statue faces the same direction where the first German gas attack took place. 2,000 Canadian soldiers died in this area. It is as if the soldier stands guard over the fallen men of combat.

Lest We Forget.... Today it is the 100th anniversary of armistice that ended the First World War. It is devastating to see how much this war has affected this area even after a hundred years.
