When in Big Bend, make this unique border crossing across the Rio Grande in a rowboat, then take a burro into town. Or...The burros are very stubborn, and won't move unless a herder makes them (with a stick). We read that we should just walk the 1/3 mi. to the town. So we did. To get to this extremely remote low pool called the Ernst Tinaja, you have to drive a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle on Old Ore Road in Big Bend National Park and hike about a mile. It was sweltering in April but so worth it to see the pink and orange flaky layers of rock laid down by eons of a shallow inland sea. The pool is a scary toxic green, and with its steep sides is a death trap to creatures other than birds or insects.
