"The outdoors" is such a complicated term and provides a varied landscape of uses. Summersville Lake, while one location, provides multiple mappings of social use by often non-overlapping communities. For the climbers that descend (and ascend) upon this region, to what extent do they attempt to appreciate its local functions? Or do these outsiders, however well-intentioned, find themselves using "stewardship" and "conservation" as modern-day forms of that age-old impulse to save Appalachia from its own people? #appalachianechoes
