Windmills still are the stereotypical essence of Holland. De Herder (the Shepard) was rebuild in 1989, but there has been a windmill around here since at least 1560. It is in working order (grain) and is now operated by volunteers.

Not your average gable stone..These four orphans are from the local orphanage, which was founded in 1575 (the gate itself is from 1785) and closed down in 1919. 

One can discover these stones and statues throughout Holland, mostly in older towns. In the pre-zipe code era, naming buildings was not just for inns (the golden lion...), but also for normal houses. You can still find them in rural areas. They would certainly become modern suburbia as well.
