Ilha de Tavira is one of six barrier islands that makes up 18400 hectares of protected nature reserve along the Ria Formosa along with wetlands, mudflats and hundreds of species of plant and wildlife.

The island itself has a commercialised centre with wooden walkways and cafes, bar, restaurants as well as a camping area (no hotels on the island). I felt a bit like i'd arrived at a theme park but once you go thought this and on to the beach, its lovely. A blue flag beach, 11km of coastline, sun shades and sun beds to rent but plenty of sand to spread out a towel away from the hustle and bustle.

The island beach is only accessible by boat and there is a water taxi and ferry service that operates daily. During the summer tourist months the ferry runs from Tavira centre from the quay side near the indoor market. But in the offpeak months (even in May) you have to go to the Quatro Águas pier. (Don't be fooled by the ferry moored on the quay looking like it is waiting for passengers!)

The walk to the ferry felt long, it was probably 20 minutes of so but in the baking sun along deserted road and salt fields it felt a trek. I'd recommend getting the bus if you can work out the timetables.

"This is a lovely property that is very close to the beach and a 5 min cycle ride to Monte Gordo. There is also a nearby shop attached to a cafe that is perfect for essentials. The beach itself (5 mins walk away) is stunning and seems to go on forever. As is clear from the pictures, decoratively the house is a tad dated inside. For those who don't mind this, however, it offers a perfect Algarve beach house. Although the house has 5 bedrooms, the small living area would make it a bit of a squeeze...

"We come to Portugal every year, staying in new places all the time, 12 people or more. This property was very close to an incredible beach, when i say close i mean less than 5 min walk with young ones at heel. They came and changed the sheets and kept things clean, the icky thing i missed that we usually see is someone cleaning the pool, but the tools where handily they're and the kids loved to do it. Lots of stairs so not sure how suitable it would be with young children or the elderly, but as adults, it was perfect and having the roof terrace was great for breakfast and drinks etc in the evening. "Great for Faro airport, especially if you have an early flight, Les than 10 minutes walk. The hotel was exceptionally clean and the staff very pleasant and helpful. I didn't have breakfast because I had a very early flight, but they did offer to make me a breakfast box to go. Also the hotel has a pool to cool off in. "

"Wonderful Birthday Stay - Truely Special! Stayed for one night before heading to Porto to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday and was absolutely blown away by the experience. We used the hotel's private transfer from the Airport, which was smooth, professional, and a great way to start the stay. The hotel kindly upgraded us to a suite as a birthday treat, compete with Prosecco and fresh fruit waiting in the the room - such a lovely suprise! The suite was beautiful, spacious, with a balcony overlooking the city and the harbour, and was spotlessly clean. A huge thank you to Rueben for going above and beyond - his warm and attentive service made the stay even more memorable. Wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommend for a special occassion or just a luxurious getaway, "
