Lecce is a pearl of art and Baroque culture, the focal point of the Salento region and the cultural centre of the entire province.
Lecce, the city where the Baroque style reached its pinnacle, finding in Lecce stone a fusion that has made its historic centre a jewel waiting to be discovered.
Its historic centre, whose beauty is unanimously recognised at an international level, is capable of encompassing enormous cultural and architectural heritage, in an incredible mixture of different styles and eras that have inevitably left their mark on the walls of the ancient city of the Salento capital. Any trip that includes even a single day's visit to Lecce cannot disregard viewing the historic centre.
A good starting point can be the Bourbon Obelisk located near Porta Napoli, one of the four historic access gates to the city (the others are Porta Rudiae and Porta San Biagio, plus Porta San Martino, which no longer exists). Entering through Porta Napoli offers a suggestive feeling of complete immersion in the city's cultural heritage, effectively entering the old city. The Gate, built by Charles V in the 16th century and recently restored, was meant to represent the grandeur of the kingdom, and to this day it succeeds perfectly in conveying such sensations to all those who pass through it.
Immediately after the gate (the historic centre is exclusively pedestrian, completely closed to traffic), you enter the evocative cobbled Via Palmieri, along which it is possible to admire the historic Teatro Paisiello and at the end of which you suddenly arrive in Piazza Duomo. The Square, one of the most beautiful in the entire city, is nothing more than a large courtyard, which provides a marvellous frame to the Duomo of Lecce (which absolutely deserves a visit) and colours itself with incredible bright red tones at sunset, or with spectacular light plays as night falls.
Walking along Via Vittorio Emanuele II, it is possible to admire an innumerable series of alleys and courtyards, until finding the church of Sant'Irene on the street, recently renovated and absolutely worth visiting both inside and outside for its spectacular facade. Continuing along the same street, one reaches Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the true core and central pivot of the city. In the centre, the Wolf, the symbol of the city par excellence, while on the side it is possible to admire the Sedile, with its spectacular entrance glass window, and the Roman amphitheatre, often the stage for shows and cultural events. Near the square, it is impossible not to visit the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Palazzo dei Celestini, true jewels of the city and universally recognised as world masterpieces of Baroque art.
Overall, the historic centre of Lecce does not have particularly extensive dimensions, indeed it lends itself to being comfortably visited on foot in a single day, perhaps in the evening, to admire even more the play of light that the white of Lecce stone is able to create, perhaps stopping to enjoy a pasticciotto or a rustico to consider one's visit to Lecce complete!
